34 and lake effect snow flurries here.

I'm good to the single digits, then all bets are off. I hate being cold.

Today's State Extremes

State Highs:
Sparrevohn 51°F
Golovin 46°F
Aniak 46°F
Bethel 45°F
Dutch Harbor 44°F
State Lows:
Snowshoe Lake -4°F
Northway -2°F
Gulkana 1°F
Puntilla Lake 1°F
Tanana 1°F

Still have high winds down around Dutch Harbor so that will keep us warm a couple more days, but should start dropping by this weekend. Weather guy callin for 20-40 below by saturday. Depends on if the clouds get pushed out, if they do we might see some cold temps.

Funny conversation today

Durring one of my phone calls to the outside today, the subject about our winters came up. After I had told him about how cold it gets by refering to it by saying(for instance) 40 below. there was this pause then ask....below what.........

Who, in their right mind, would willingly want to endure 40 below temperatures? It would take me 20 minutes just to get suited up to go outside in those temperatures, then what happens if you're outside and suddenly need to use the outhouse? Speaking of which, how do you get a septic system to work up there? Doesn't the perma-frost prohibit the soil from soaking up the liquid? Heck, I would think the liquid would freeze before it even GETS to the leach field!

Blake, glad the surgery went well. Hope you have a speedy recovery!

Evening DTR, got a dusting of snow last night, most was melted by noon. Might get some more tonight.

40 below is not as bad as it sounds...its a dry cold (don't laugh) You can sorta work out in it if you take breaks to warm up.I would rather have a calm day at 40 below than a zero degree day with blowing winds in chicago anyday. It does take a bit to get dressed if your going to spend any time out in it, but running out for some wood or stepping out for a smoke I just throw on my fleece jacket and fur slippers, since my house stays around 75 I hang out in tshirt an sweats. Need to go....Just whip it out, trick is to start before you have to go to bad otherwise it can be funny watching some one trying to get thru 4-5 layers of clothing while dancing before it gets to late.

Sewer.....I have a heat trace that is thermo controlled that wraps the pipe from house to tank then foam insulation over that. that line is 12 feet down the field bed is 15 foot down and is done in clean bull rock and in a sand area that drains very well

So perma-frost doesn't go that deep? Somehow I had it in my mind that it was 50 feet deep.
