Dodge V10
Dodge V10
I don't want to go to another site and register just to ask one question. My brother is looking at a 1999 2500 with a V10. He wanted to know what kind of performance mods he could do to it. As far as I know, it's the same block as a viper V10, right? So all of the Viper mods apply, am I correct?

Crower will hook you up with a new cam that really wakes it up, and new valvesprings.
Mopar PErformance makes an ECM BUT you need to run premium fuel with it and... to put it mildly, it pings like a bugger.
I spend 6K on my 1994 V-10 and went from 241 RWHP /426RWTQ stock to 309RWHP and 533lbs-ft.
I did the cam, shaved the heads, 1 range colder on plugs, 8.8mm wires, Ram air box (hand laid FG and some pvc hose) plus I had a federal (dual cat) truck so i went Dual shotgun 2.5" from the cats to the hitch.
for 6 K you can BOMB a diesel better. The V-10 I had was an auto 3.55 DHD with a cheeta VB and a 4.4 lever on the trans.
If babied at 70 mph I would see 17 US MPG, but it would drink unleaded at a rate of 7 mpg towing a double over 27' 5er at 11K lbs.
Great motor, practically indestructible but thirsty.
The Viper heads also will not change over to the truck block. Even though the bore centers are the same, the cooling passages and galleries are wildly different.
Hope this helps.

I don't believe they're the same IIRC. Different bore and stroke. I will say that my dad has a 95 and that puppy has surprised me. Totally stock and with a better shifting tranny it would be a pretty quick truck, for a factory gasser.
I'd say from the number you gave in the previous statement, this is an understatement!
Diesels rule.

although, I would take a Dodge pickup V-10 for sure, just not over a Cummins
They run a 47re in the V10's, correct? Thanks for all of the info. I don't think he's looking for huge power or a diesel. He will see the error in his ways soon enough.

Yes, same trans.
Get a TC for it too. You will be suprised what a cheap TCI convertor will do to the V-10.
almost forgot, i did have headers on the 10 as well, but for the life of me, can't remember who made them, but i do know they don't make them any more.
Does anybody know why Dodge even puts a V10 in their trucks? They're really nothing that the CTD isn't, and from what I understand their cost is comparable, and they get half the fuel economy.
They haven't put a V-10 in the Rams (other than the SRT-10, which is another thing entirely) since the early 2003 model year. I bought mine when I lived in Ohio because I knew the truck was going to have to sit outside - it started reliably down to -35 degF. It was a reliable workhorse that towed our 5th wheels for 6 years with no problems, but it sure was thirsty!! And it was around $5K (IIRC) less expensive than a Cummins.
By the way, my wife loved it because (in her words) it rode and drove like a Lincoln Town Car.

It was only a $900ish upgrade over the 360 vs $5k for the Cummins. Plus it had more hp and torque (stock of course) compared to the Cummins (at least in the earlier 2nd gens. They put them in the early 3rd gens and I have only ever seen 1 3rd gen with a v10.
