Deer Rifle for kid

My son is anxiously awaiting his chance to go deer hunting with dad for the first time. He is only 11 right now so he'll have to wait until next year. So I was thinkin the other day that I'll either have to buy him a rifle or let him use one of mine, .270, .30-06, or .30-30. Well I was at wal-mart today and happened to stumble on a clearance sale, Remington 710 youth model .243 with a factory mounted Bushnell 3x9-40 scope for 220 bucks. They only had 3 left at 1 o'clock and by the time I finally decided to go back and get it at 3 o'clock they had 1 left so I nabbed it. Should be a good starter gun for the boy??? I'm just pumped that I'll finally get to start hunting with my son!!

.243 is a good caliber to start with. .270 would've worked well too.

Perfect gun for your son, and great buy. Good thing you didn't wait any longer.

Good choice IMO should not stomp to hard for him and they shoot very well, might improve the scope later but very good gun! Good job DAD :)

243 Win. is also a good caliber for woodchucks too. Not much kick and easy on the pocket.

Good gun for starting the lad out on. Good luck and enjoy your time in the field with him.

.243 is a great starter caliber...

good caliber, but why wait till next year to take him?

Upgrade the scope. Nothing more frustrating than a poor scope.

My 7 yr old killed these two last year with a .223 Rossi with 1 shot each. I think it's a perfect starter gun.

Cute kiddo. Good shooting.

sounds like a great gun, but around here we rely on the ol' Rem 12 ga. It's our universal gun, goose, deer, dove, turkey.

IMO that's the best starter gun. Same one I started out on except mine has an aftermarket leopold 3x9. Sounds like you got a good deal on it too. I still love that gun... I deer hunt with a .270 these days but the .243 is my choice for coyotes... not much kick and easy to pack around. enjoy the time in the woods with your son, it doesn't get any better

Thats what I'm looking forward to. To me it's not about taking the biggest deer, but the time spent with my son.
