I too thought it might be a fake, and after Snopes.com couldn't say one way or another. When I first heard that he was forced to shut it down, I thought that sucks that two idiots who can't drive ruined it, but after I read the arrticle were the owner states:

I told the neighbors, I told the sheriff, if they get any complaints, I'll shut it down, because the neighbors are more important to me than the Christmas lights," Williams said on NBC's "Today" show on Monday.

The owner seems to be a really good class kind of guy.
