Computer / Regitry cleaning ?

Has anybody used one of those "Computer Cleaning" programs? My desk top runs good but I have noticed it is slower than before. I have done the basics of defraging, deleting programs I know I don't need or use etc. Just wondering if those programs really work to get rid of the stuff that is not needed? I see lots of stuff I THINK is not needed but am too afraid to delete it.

I ended up using regcure and it seems to have done a good job. Found 1559 errors and fixed them.

Your anti-virus software may have one already. There are several good ones available, check this out.

When my computer get to slow and stops responding, it is easier to reformat the boot drive and re install the OS.

I am in the process of getting ready to reformat mine right now, my boot drive is 500GB and I am running Second Copy to automatically back it up onto 2 internal and 2 external Western Digital 1TB My Book Firewire drives so I have 4 archives incase 1 fails.

Every time somebody used a registry cleaner to fix their computer I would have to use the recovery disk to get it to work again.

I am sure some are ok but I don't trust anything that is free.

I use Norton Utilities "WinDoctor" on anything that I work on that appears would benefit from it.I do not install on any computer, just run it from the CD drive. It is one of the few things that I trust but be forwarned,it will install software on your computer even running it from the CD.
You could make the argument that it does it for reference for the next time you need to run WinDoctor but I consider it just another spy program and delete it from the registry. You can buy it pretty cheap on ebay.Ron G

I usually just do a complete reinstall of the OS about every 6 months. I back every thing up kinda like Jim.

PC Cleaner

I'm an IT consultant and I have cleaned malware off many of my clients PC's using ComboFix, I haven't had any problems with it yet. Best of all it's free. There is also a free program called CCleaner Link removed that will clean junk out of the registry, on that same site is a program called Defraggler, they are all free and if you run these three tools you will notice an increase in PC performance.

Link removed

The download link in this post has multiple trojans in it. It should be deleted immediately.

Those are legitimate programs, no trojans in them, if your PC is showing them as Trojans then you probably already have a virus. Anytime I've used those and it shows them as Trojans, it was usually spyware spoofing as an anitvirus program showing that software as a Trojan such as AntiVirus 2008, which is itself a virus.
