Compressor

Has anyone ever seen a air compressor mounted on our cummins engines?
I know there are companies that mount a york style AC compressor on the engine,
(how is the belt arrangement with the serpentine on our engines?)
But I am looking for something heavy duty. Our engine must have been installed in something with air brakes.
I am looking to mount a small Tu-Flo500 pressure lubricated & 01 governor.
Any ideas? I was thinking maybe small shuttle bus or something.
Jim.

I think that I recall Haulin-in-Dixie saying that the motor that he put in his truck had or maybe still has an air pump on it. Think he said it came out of a larger medium-duty truck. Maybe he'll chime in about what he has or what it originally had.

I have the kilby set up on mine. It is driven by a v-belt off of the alternator. I am not driving jack hammers and such but it more than handle my impacts, die grinder, air horns and supension. Haulin-dixie has Cummins set up on his truck. I looked into it but the cost and modifications were MUCH more than I wanted to do.

You're thinking along the right lines for an air brake equipped 5.9. Unfortunately our engines are using the air compressor drive for the vacuum pump/power steering pump combo. What Haulin in Dixie did was use an air compressor/power steering pump combo, and run a small electric vacuum pump for the HVAC system.

Just how good are our power steering pumps?
"My other idea is to cut into the pressure side of the pump and have it run a maybe 2 horsepower "ROSS' hydraulic motor and then have the motor either direct coupled or through a reduction run the air pump. An unloader would take care of the pressure regulation.
I cannot find too many placed on this engine to hang a hydraulic pump.
Watcha think. Jim

I don't know if the P/S pump would handle a Ross motor without losing the pressure needed for your steering. What are you trying to drive? If you need large amounts VMAC builds under hood units that work real well. but they require lots of room. If it is just to power your air horn, tires and emegencu tire changes maybe on the electric compressors from Thomas woud do for your needs.

I like the viair 450c that I jut got done installing, there are bigger models and for ease of use, install, and small size I think they are a good option. btw jim you cna see a pic of the compressor in my gallery to see the size and where I put it.

do you have one of these on your truck. We have some on a bunch of F*rds at work. THe compressor is fine but there are a lot of hoses and an oil seperator and controls to be had with it. They work great on our tire trucks and gate trucks except that the idle has to be increased when they are on. If you need LOTS of air good deal.
For most of us either an York compressor, a Vair , or Thomas with an air tank is more than useful. for the people that want electric look at some of the mini truck air suspension compressors, all different volumes for fast recovery.
