Colt Commander Modifications & Progress
If you guys remember, a month or so back I posted the pic of my New Rollmark Stainless Colt Commander 45. Since then, I have had alot of modifications done to it. I can honestly say that at 25yds I am getting 1" groups with zero malfunctions.
Here is a rundown of what all I have done so far. 1. Videcki 3 hole trigger 2. Install, smooth frame slots and set overtravel. 3. EGW thick flange bushing .575" Cut and fit to barrel 4. Refit lower barrel feet for Proper lock up and crown barrel 5. Reliability tune(throat frame and recontour and polish, polish barrel mouth and recontour forhollowpoints, polish chamber and breechface, bevel firing pin hole, clearance grip safety to remove without dropping MSH, set extractor tension and polish, deburr bottom of chamber, and smooth disconnector rail, and smooth hammer hooks and sear nose, and check for hammer follow, set trigger at 4 1/2 lbs 6. EGW Slide Stop 7. Wilson Extractor 8. EGW Firing Pin Stop 9. Lower and flair ejection port 10. Ed Brown High Rise Beavertail grip safety with memory groove 11. Ed Brown 20lpi Checkered Main spring housing 12. ISMI 19lb main spring 13 Ed Brown Tactical Thumb Safety 14. Kimber Double Diamond Rosewood Grips 15. Cylinder & Slide Ultra Lite Sear The beavertail grip safety came out very nice. Not too many smiths will blend the grip safety to the frame or thumb safety. This one did. Sorry about the picture below..... me + a cheap digital camera = [yuk] Customized Colt Commander https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...040006-med.jpg |
Just out of curiousity, how much money have you spent on your project mentioned here? Also, what is it used for?
The 1" groups, are they off hand at 25 yards? Politely submitted here, because I know what kind of holy wars can be started on these here type of subjects. Matt |
The gun will be my CCW. The 25yard group headshots a 1'' groups are about an inch from center of head. This is due in part to me anticipating the recoil. I bought this gun back in October and paid around 600 with my LEO discount. I have about 300 all together in parts and labor which is WAY below what the smiths asking price is since he is a friend of mine.

Sounds like you did it right, nice piece! (Ed Brown's Memory Groove is my favorite grip safety). The best part of building them yourself is that it will always be your favorite. I built a 2-tone on a Springfield frame and Caspian slide(45 ACP, of course). I quit building them after Kimber started making JM Browning's masterpiece. Can't build em cheaper than you can buy a Kimber. So now all my work is on AR's. You can still do them cheaper than you can buy them, that is until Kimber jumps on the black rifle bandwagon. Les Baer and Bill Wilson already have. -Steve
PS- Get rid of the GI sites! Put a Novak or Wilson Nite-eyes on that slide! :D |
Wow did you do good on prices!

Thanks,
The modifications werent done all at once. I did have some timing and ejecting problems with the NIB Colt at first. You could really tell a difference in accuracy after the stock slide stop was replaced with the EGW slide stop. With the addition of the ISMI 19lb main spring and C&S sear, it got ALOT better. CTD you are right [laugh] I am planning on installing a set of Novaks when time allows. |
VERY NICE!!!
Is that the series 70 type, or the series 80? I'm told theyre starting to come out with the ser 70 types again. I have an old ser. 70 I had EGW put Novaks on. It's a work in progress.:D Eric |
Very nice piece...even though the picture didn't work. :)

Here goes the Holy War! [laugh] [laugh]
Hoss - which Glock? Matt |
Glock 30 is my weapon of choice....carried in a close fitting leather OWB slide holster at about 4:45....or in a kydex IWB holster at 3:00.
