Cobra CB Radio
Cobra CB Radio
I am thinking of buying this CB for my Ram. I was wondering if anyone has one or a similar Cobra and how well does it perform? This will be used for long trips only. I usually travel alone and it would be a nice to have.
I had a Cobra many years ago and as I recall it worked very well.

Personal opinion here with CBs, don't waste your money on the cobra 29, there is nothing wrong with them and they will give you years of trouble free use, but you are paying for a backlit face and chrome with a bunch of *****.
I have worked on and owned a lot of CBs and when it comes down to it the 29 will sound exactly the same as any other off the shelf legal radio, (FCC guidlines) it can be tuned to sould better than some, but if you choose the right radio they can be tuned and sound just as good as the 29.
If you want to spend $160 on a radio you can get an export radio that has a lot more channels and will put out close to twice as much power and have more audio for about the same price, but you said it wouldn't stay in the truck all the time and only be used for trips so I would say spending that much would be a waste of your money so my suggestions are.
As far as cheap and get the job done the uniden pro 510 is a good radio, I have a spare that's over 15 years old and it still works great and has been abused. For what they cost a little tuning and they sound great, and have a decent noise blanker for a cheap radio.
cheapest I could find

If you want weather channels I would suggest this one, it's fairly cheap and I've had decent luck with them too.

Thread moved for better exposure.
I've been running the same radio in my truck for years.
It's a good basic CB, ...... just spend a little extra on a GOOD antenna and set the SWR and you'll be ready to go.
Export radios are good and throw their signal farther, but I have had no trouble recieving 'Smokey Reports' and traffic conditions.
NOTE: when the Weather Channel brodcasts a warning for the area, the warning tone preceding the announcement will scare the crap outta ya the first couple of times........

Thanks for moving the thread. I was not sure where to start it.
I have been thinking of a CB the last few trips I have taken. I always put the move on the back burner. Now I have a trip for Thursday and the CB is center stage again.
No time to shop around. Based on comments here I am going to buy this unit for the trip. It is available locally. I will get one today.
Thanks all for the info.

The 29 is a good radio for sure. Not as good as the old school 29s but good all the same. My local Freightliner store has the 29 Chrome on sale right now for $89 plus tax. Thats a smokin deal on that radio.
I think anyone that travels needs one. Its cool to listen to all the trash talk and its better than a radar detector any day!
Get a good antenna and set it up right and you will be good.
If you do start talking on it pretty regular then eventually you will want some more power to get there more. For that I highly recomend a Connex or even better a Stryker! Connex radios are known for their distinct audio sound being crystal clear. I personally love my Stryker. Just the radio converted to 11 meter on AM dead keys 30watts and swings about 80watts.

Well, looks like I will have time to check this out further. The shop did not have a radio. So, I will make this trip without. I definately will look for one when I get back.
The fact is I gave a CB radio to a friend as I was not using it. I wish I had it back now. Oh well.

Man I forgot all about this little radio here. I have one of these and it is a sweet AM talker. Very easy to use and with a little tuning, Astatic or Road King mic, and a good antenna the others will think you are on a big Connex. Great price too!

I have not much experience with the Cobra 29, I think I may have had one years ago.
However, I have had a 19 ultra III, 19 DX III, and an 18 WX ST, and have has good results with all three.
I agree with kc8ksg though, paying for a 29 classic, is like paying for a Cadillac when all you need is a Caprice.
You are paying for the chrome and *****.
