I was just curious what all you fella's use to fight cholesterol. I dislike the idea of pills but I've heard things like red wine, cinnamon, and green tea help. I've heard there are certain types of red wine that work better than others so if someone were to enlighten me I'd appreciate it. Any other suggestions wouldn't be bad either.

I go for about 6 fried eggs, pound of bacon, and a pan of biscuits. about once a week.
The rest of the time its oatmeal, boiled or baked foods and watch what I eat and exercise regularly.

I basically gave up worrying about it. Every week a new study comes out that says this is bad and that is bad, then 3 years later a new study comes out and says they were wrong, sorry. Remember the sacrin ban? Now, 25 years later, it has been determined it is safe.
No matter how hard we try, no matter what we eat, or don't eat, no matter what we do, or don't do we are all gonna die. Only 1 person who was on this earth made it off alive, and that is debatable.
Eat, drink, what you want, when you want it.
The "safe" levels were set by drug companies to peddle their choestrol lowering drugs.
There is a date out there that has my name on it. Nothing can stop that date from taking me. Nothing. And there is a date out there with your name on it too.

I've taken moderate amounts of medications for years now with no symptoms at all. Unless you can go vegan and live on a treadmill take the meds. I take generics which have been used for decades. My doctor doesn't prescribe any of the newer ones in light of catastrophic damage reported to users in spite of clinical trials. No biggee compared to the possible illnesses i.e. stroke, heart attack etc. Good luck!

I do the same, I exercise ( jog 1½ - 3 miles) at least twice a week. I have changed my diet too. I eat very little fast food, fried food, or snacks. I eat more veggies and fruits. Overall I eat a lot more healthier than I have before, I exercise regularly, and as an end result my overall health has increased dramatically.
My cholesterol (LDL, HDL, triglycerides, and glycemic index) is low, I have fantastic blood pressure (averages about 120 / 75), and I have lost about 20 lbs over the past 6 months. I did this so I don't have to take cholesterol pills like my dad has to, or have diabetes like my grandpa.
Anyone looking to lower thier cholesterol or eat healthier, or become a healthier person should read a book called "Don't Eat This Book : Fast Food and The Super-sizing of America" by Morgan Spurlock, the same guy that made the movie "Supersize Me". The book is great its what made me eat a lot healthier, and pay attention to nutrition labels and become more aware as to what I am putting into my body. I highly reccomend that book.

I "second" the oatmeal!!! It's supposed to be great, for you. I put it in a bowl with a tsp. of cinnamon, skim milk & about two tbsp's. of ground Golden Flaxseed (freshly ground, daily, in a coffee grinder). I microwave it & it's not bad. I put two packets of Splenda on top for a bit of sweetness.
My sister refers to it as "mortar" or "stucco".
It's funny, I used to love bacon, eggs & hashbrowns. The greasier the better.
For years now, I've been eating the oatmeal. It's kind of boring but, just knowing that it is good for you makes me not mind the fact that it's boring. I'll bet I dont have two bacon & egg breakfasts a year, now.
One of the best pieces of news I ever got was when I found out that "dark chocolate" was, actually, GOOD for you. It has the same thing in it that red wine has. Dark beer has it, also.
You guys may want to look into using Golden Flaxseed. It's supposed to be amazing stuff. Natural, also, like eating oatmeal. I brought home a 25 lb. bag from the RV show in Quartzite, AZ., a few years ago, & gave some of it to my Mom. She's in her 80's with a bit of heart trouble. At one of her Doctor visits, she asked her cardiologist about Golden Flaxseed & if it was a myth & "snake oil". He leaned back in his chair, smiled & told her that he uses flaxseed everyday in his oatmeal. Said it was wonderful stuff & very healthy for you.
Golden Flaxseed is supposed to help lower cholestrol & blood pressure, reduce cancer risks, stabilize blood sugars, lessen symptoms of arthritis, asthma & allergies & helps relieve constipation & diarrhea.
It might be something to look into.

I think out of all you can do, exercise is the most important.
everyone in my family has lived to a minimum of 80 years, some well over 100 years. Bacon, Eggs, and biscuits for breakfast, eggs and bread for dinner, and fried tators and something else fried for supper. No sitting in between meals, there was too much work to get done.
Now, everyone sits. work is done on your butt.

Nonetheless I kind of like the oatmeal idea. I think I'll try that.

You had me laughing my butt off because what you said truly hits home. I am afterall, an Okie boy myself, born and raised in OKC. I joined the USN in '87 and to this day, bacon and eggs, or biscuits and gravy are my all time favorite breakfast's. But I only do them once a week at the most, and as luck would have it, my girlfriend made me biscuits and gravy this morning. Umm Umm! What a gal!
I take Zocor 40mg, and I'm surprised I haven't heard one person mention it already.
Also quit smoking 19 years ago, and quit drinking (cold turkey) over 3 years ago. Qutting both of these bad habits was not done on my own though. Thank you Jesus! Now, if I can just get rid of this sailor's mouth....I mean potty mouth.
I don't mean to offend anyone but... I know of a few people that cook things like bacon and actually save the grease from it in the refrigerator. Everything they cook, the pan would be lubed with grease, kind of like butter. Obviously these people ended up having cholesterol problems but rightfully so. I like greasy food as much as the next person but that's a bit extreme.
