Chevy going back to drums

I can't believe it. Chevy did such a crappy job on their rear disks for the trucks that they are actually putting DRUM brakes back on them. Can yall believe that? I didn't believe it until I looked under my roommates brand new 06 and sure enough he's got drums. Why on Earth would you want rear drum brakes? Sorry for the random post but it's boggling my mind why Chevy would do this.

Ahh. Well, I guess if my company was doing as bad as they are I'd cut corners to. I'd just do it in other places than stopping ability.

cheaper

i doubt its due to bad rear disc's. sounds more like a $$$$ saver, and cut some cost. one more reason not to buy a chev. but those new duramax's run fast. i test drove one about 2 weeks ago for giggles. i was impressed with the quikness.

make the rear drums about 6 to 8 inches wide and you got a set of brakes.
I have driven trucks with drums all the way around with no power boost. If the brakes work effectively enough to slide a tire, that is all you need.

I don't mind drums ... until it's time to change pads. Then I hate the stupid things. Them little spring doohickeys that fly at your face at mach 5 .... . I agree on the cost cutting aspect ...

The 2 advantages disks have over drums is less fading and no need to adjust. The fading of drum brakes is mainly due to the fact that as a drum heats up it expands its diameter and no longer closely fits the shoe so it loses friction area. This doesn't happen with disks. Because the piston doesn't retract and simply accumulates fluid behind it it doesn't need to be adjusted as the pad wears down. It's also a heck of a lot easier to change pads than shoes on a 1 ton axle. OK, that's 3 advantages.

I can't believe that drums are cheaper than disks. Disks are so much simpler. Maybe it's the requirement for the parking brake.

Well it has to do with the parking brake failing a lot and the calipers failing. My buddy at o'reilly's said he has sold tons of rear calipers and parking brake mechanisms.

All my Silverado driving buddies have issues with the rear disks. The parking brakes drag and prematurely wears out the pads. So GM goes back to drums instead of trying to fix the issue.

Yeah, like what would it take to fix. A stronger spring maybe?
