This is a story about a 12 year old girl who is being sued for download music from the internet....I'll be the first to tell u that ignorance of the law is no excuse and that these musicians are entitled to make money for there work but 17 dollars for a cd that has one good song maybe 2. I think 6 or 7 bucks is fair for a cd maybe the record companies should stop ripping off the musicians and the public off, we would all be happier

Re:Check this out
Actually, right now they're only looking at people who are sharing files out to others. If you belong to a p2p network such as KaZaa, Morpheus, Grokster, Limewire, etc., and you share out files to other users, they can download a file from you as a test and as part of the download, they can log your IP address.
If you allow anyone to download a copyrighted work without having a license to do so, then you illegally distributed copyrighted material - even if you legally own the file on your PC. And there is no privacy violation since you voluntarily shared the file. Also, there is no privacy agreement between a customer and their ISP, so when they subpoena your ISP for your personal info, the ISP will give it to them.
For them to go after the downloaders, the burden of proof would shift significantly against the RIAA. You can legally download a file if you have already purchased the same song on CD. Posessing a copy is legal if you legally own the original version.
Also, you would have to download the file from the RIAA in order for them to legally track the download. If they sniff downloads to detect the IP address of the downloader, that is nothing more than hacking, and is a criminal act on their part. By the way, the RIAA does have user names on these networks so that they can track users who download from them. They may try to go after those users in the future, although it would be very difficult for them.

Re:Check this out
I think the RIAA should spend more time trying to find a good artist than can actually produce an album with more than 1 good song on it, then people might buy them. Or like DF said, charge $6 for it....

Thecatsfan is right you can still download just make sure whatever program you’re using you’re NOT SHARING!!! Right now the RIAA is going after huge offenders, people sharing in the thousands of songs. Also I think that’s why Universal announced last week they’re dropping the price of their CD’s to somewhere around $13 and said they’ll get it down to $10 in the near future.
Re:Check this out
I hate to make this comparison, but it's like trying to stop drug traffic. You really don't accomplish anything by punishing the consumer. You have to stop the distributor. They're attacking users who share the files, because their goal is to make everyone stop sharing. It won't work too well if you have 60 million users looking to download and nobody to download from.
But that doesn't mean they won't ever look to make an example out of a few downloaders.

Re:Check this out
propblem is after napster the programmers got smart ......there's no central server to be routed through thus the providers are the consumers also so there's no central provider to sue
so now they're going after guys that share since they are the providers
I've moved my 20 gigs (about 5000 songs) of mp3's out of my shared folder ..........now I'm just a user ..........
actually this whole people stopped buying music cause of downloading is crap ..............I download I still buy 2-3 cd's per month , I just use the downloads to find stuff I like
when I find a whole cd that's good I buy it
check out linkin park's "Meteora" every song on it is awsome
Evanescence's fallen is also very good
I just got zeppelin's how the west was won in the mail yesterday .............it's also very good

thecatsfan is on the right track....Van Halen needs a singer and like it or not it should be Diamond Dave! ;D
I am older, but new music is terrible
.
Nothing can touch the old stuff (rock) Zep, Sab., OLD Metallica, AC/DC and on and on and on or Waylon, Willie, David, Hank, Johnny, Kris, Highwaymen, Jerry Lee Lewis.
I BUY ALL of my music...I like having the original covers and such.
I guess I am too old or I was born too late ;D, Yeah that's it

Also, that would be great if Diamond Dave re-united with VH.
Best quote ever from Dave: "I'm a family man, in fact, I've started about 3 or 4 families this year".
