You could go the cheap route and just get a pillow top addition to your current mattress. My wife got one for our bed a while back, and I was against it at the time because I thought it was just a waste of money (as anything is that doesn't go in the truck or on the RV).

I was wrong!! It turned out to be money well spent. Not sure what it cost, because she bought it, and is sleeping on it now or I would ask her. Never wake her up unless you have to

I have the pillow top right now but its making the bed too soft, that and it sinks in the middle (too much... um... activity on it I guess).

am looking at a Kingston right now. 700 coil springs with Latex instead of memory foam. Claim it is supposed to be the best ?
Some of the retailers who carry them have a computer bed for you to lay on and it gives a printout to the manufacturer instructing them how to build it to fit you

The king bed we have has 1750 coils. Very slight pillow top and my wife does not feel when I move or get into bed. Its a Sealy.
Non flip matress has to have the non flip box springs too. We found out the hard way when the salesman sold us the wrong ones and we had problems with the corners of the first matress. They replaced everything no questions asked and explained what happened. They even upgraded us by four models as its all they had in stock.

I might look at a sleep number bed some day.

Well, I'm a young guy and haven't done much mattress shopping other than what I did last year.

I looked at the Sleep Number a few times, looked at a local manufacturer who actually builds right in the store (you can see the factory floor from the showroom), looked at the Sealy, Simmons, Beauty Rest, and...... I finally purchased a Tempurpedic (20 year Warranty). I don't have any back problems, but wanted to make this the first and last time I made such a purchase.

After all my looking I consulted with one of my cousins who actually has some back problems. He had been through about 8 different mattresses in 3 years. He finally stopped being stubborn and went to see his doctor. That week he purchased a Tempurpedic and has slept well every night since.

I'm pleased with my purchase. I absolutely dread the thought of sleeping anywhere other than my own bed. I have lost count of how many mornings I have awoken in the same position I was when I went to sleep. They are not cheap, but certainly not the most expensive either. 120 day free trial from the factory, but you can probably find a local dealer that will be able to offer a much better price than the factory.

Anyone ever heard the profit margins on mattresses?

I had a sleep number back when they first came out. When we moved to our present house it flew out of my truck and the compressor shattered on the road. Kinda hard to adjust like that. Now we are on a Postropedic (sp?)

Can't believe how expensive they are.

Wow bumpy,

You're the first person I've heard from that hasn't thought it was the greatest thing since diesel! When I was in Southwest Oregon earlier this year for two months my mom kept an eye on my place from time to time. One night she was too tired to drive home and ended up sleeping on the Tempurpedic. She had one ordered within the week, but stayed each of the next few nights at my place until hers came in!

Yeah, $3K is about right for certain models. My King was $2300, but it is just the mattress. Now they have a pillowtop variety that is easily approaching $5K. Get the one with the heat and vibrating/massaging zones and it could get out of hand quickly.

This will be long but to start I own a furniture store and a mattress purchase is always a hard decision. When I started we sold Sealy, then Simmons, then tempur-pedic, then englander then this small company called therapedic (actually the 5th largest mattress manufacture in the world but no one ever knows them). Anyway when you buy one of the 3 "s" brands, for the most part you are paying just for the name, they do have some good gimicks to say, for example the removeable, washable topper that simmons is pushing now that may be of benefit to some people but not many, and cost big $$$ to get the top but not much better support. Of all the people I've talked to and met the sleep number beds seems to keep most people happy. Like someone else said, the tempur-pedics seem to please everyone when they first get them but soon after they don't like them, most complain they are too firm and get a topper to help in most cases. I prefer the mattress construction that includes and base spring unit, then a layer 2 - 5" of memory foam, then a layer of convoluted foam, to me seems to give the best comfort and support. I could have any mattress set I want, including a exclusive simmons memory foam that retails at $5k, but I choose a englander style with the above build, that retails for a 1/4th of that, why because it was the most comfortable to me and my wife. One thing alot of people don't realize is a mattress's feel changes by tempature. stores are generally cool, like your home, foam, especially the memory foams is highly tempure sensitive. You MUST lie on a bed for 20 mins plus, in the position you sleep in to get a feel for the bed, you may feel stupid, and this still doesn't get you close, but is much better that lying down or sitting on it and thinking you know how it feels. My reccomendations, if your going to spend big money check out the sleep # beds, then the tempur-pedic pillow tops, then whatever floats your boat, just make sure you really try them out. Also alot of stores sell the same beds but they change the names so you can't compare prices, ex the simmons baymont pt would be the same as the simmons aria pt at another store, if you find a bed you like try 1-800 mattress to see if you can save some $$$. Also stores that offer a return policy are two fold, if you don't like it you can try another one out but what do you think happens to the one you return? also remember a mattress is the only piece of furniture that effects your mood and health, you will fill better with a good nights sleep so buy the best/most comfortable you can afford, that doesn't mean the one thats best for you is the most expensive they offer. Everyone has a different opionion of comfort and no matter what I say or anyone else what matters is what's comfortable to you.

Yeah we have the pillow top hollywood deal or something like that. and after tax we were there . Than they gave us 150.00 to spend in the bedding department and we purchased 2 tempur pillows (we had to add to the gift card) They were a little hard to get used too also. I don't know what I would replace it with so I guess it's not all that bad.Maybe it's that my wallet is so much thinner, that I can't get comfortable! As long as the wifes happy!

A matress isnt anything to skimp on. What other single spot do you spend a third of your life?

Why, in your truck of course.

If only, I think Bed is #1, Work is #2, La-z-boy is #3, truck is a distant #19 or so.
