Broken Ankle and Walking...

So on Jan 1 of this year, I broke my ankle trying to arrest someone who didn't want to go to jail. I was in a cast for about 6 weeks and in that ugly boot thing for a few more. Over the last week, I have been supposed to be walking. I HAVE been walking on it but it HURTS like HAIL!!!! Most of the pain seems to be in my foot and not my ankle though. I'm just curious how long it usually takes before I can be walking like normal again without wanting to scream in pain. Any thoughts?

Sorry to here about the screw up. I hope you got the jug head that caused you to break your ankle behind bars.
I’d say about two weeks for the real pain to subside. The joints have to limber up .Then about two more weeks and some PT and you will be pretty much back to normal.
I have abused my knees and feet a lot and this is pretty much the standard drill.

I have never broken an ankle , but I have sprained one of mine twice now, the first time it took a few weeks of walking on it before it didn't hurt, the second time i got some physio therapy a couple times a week, and it didn't take quite as long.

I know it hurts , but the more you can walk on it , the faster the pain will go away.

On edit :

I'm sure you figured this out , but you need to really watch where you step too, uneven ground is really bad, like lawns , gravel driveways etc etc. Hard flat surfaces will help keep you from twisting or rolling it and delaying the healing.

Thanks for the tips. I figured out the flat ground thing a few days ago when I was trying to go out and let out the dog. I was walking across the lawn and really felt it. I haven't done it again since. Once I get to walking on it, it feels ok. However, when I first get up in the morning it's almost unbearable.

His court date is coming up. I can't wait.

It's pretty normal for it to be worse in the morning , even after sitting for a couple hours, it will stiffen up when not being used. the range of motion will get greater the more you use it.

Make sure guy gets what he deserves when he court date comes around!

I will be no help on the healing part, but I have heard from a few doctors that once you break an ankle, it will always be susceptible to future breaks. As in they never heal up as good as before you broke it.

Hope it heals good for ya and just follow the dr.'s orders to the letter.

you might want to try wearing a shoe to bed for awhile. inserts in your shoes, shoes wherever you go for awhile...inserts help...the arch can mess up after a break.

Well, I have broken My feet and ankles more than I'd like to remember.. How was it walking in the cast with the boottie??? Was it a clean break?? To be completely honest, it shouldn't hurt that much after this much time... It will be sore, but shouldn't have a lot of pain... I am no doctor, but like I said been hurt a lot...

After 3 weeks or so or whenever the pain used to go away, I would excersize my joint in the cast... Just moving it as much as I could, putting a little force on the cast... It kept my muscle's and ligaments from becoming dorment...

Broke my ankle the end of last year. Went to the VA and they put me in a brace on Sat until I could go in on Tues. I found a "boot" from someone in the family and wore that for the weekend. By the time Monday came around, it felt worse than when I broke it and hurt lower in the foot and also a bit higher on the shin. It looked a bit swollen still, but only where it hurt. It became unbearable once blood would flow to it after standing. Went back to the hospital and they said it was cellulitis. Never had a cut or anything, but they put me on the antibotics and all felt fine within 2 days. Good luck with it.

Speaking from experience it should get better a couple weeks into using it again. Be sure to follow the dr's instructions tho and don't push it too hard.....I pushed mine a little too hard when rehabbing it and 10 years later an paying for that lack of patience in a big way. Sure hope the dirtbag you were chasing pay's the price for what he did.

Man, i feel your pain

I busted my right ankle pretty good on Feb 4th this year! I had to have it operated on and a plate and some screws fitted. I dont get my cast off till 26th March, then i have to go with the boot thing for a while.

I run my own business here in the UK selling American cars and trucks and not being able to drive is hurting me financially too.

Don't skip the pain meds to be tuff. Taking the pain actually slows the healing process.

I broke my fibula at the boot top (broke it playing hockey) and wore the following.
Strap on boot cast for 1 week to let the swelling go down some.
cast for 3 weeks
new cast for 2 weeks
Strap on boot cast for 2 weeks, on and off, mostly on during the day but off around the house.

Not a ton of pain but the strap on cast really did helped. Also the muscles are weak from being in the cast and you are more then likely over stressing other muscles in an attempt to avoid stressing the point where the bone broke. So exercise it until it starts to hurt a little then strap the boot cast back on for a while, repeat until you do not need the cast.
