Bread making, who here makes their own bread?

Just made my third loaf of bread, and I have to say this stuff is awesome and delicious. This is something I have just recently gotten into. Every loaf I have made has been way better than any store bought bread I have ever had.

So far I have made:

A loaf of white bread (my first one)
A whole grain honey wheat loaf (very tasty)
and a multi grain honey oat bread.

I make mine completly by hand. I don't have a bread machine, and don't think I ever will. I think its funner to make it by hand, rather than pour ingredients into a machine.

Anyone else make thier own bread? Have any recipes to share?

Are the cutbacks so bad in the Coast Guard that they make you bake your own bread ??

I bought the wife a bread maker a few years ago and it does an ok job ... I used it a couple times.

I just walk next door to the landlords bakery and get some of his creations. Try mixing some pumpkin and sunflower seeds into the dough or at least sprinkle it on top. Good stuff !!!

We have a bread machine and it makes the best bread! Plus it makes the whole house smell great. Wow making it by hand is a sign of true dedication! I wish I could take credit for the good bread but I have to give it all to the machine. We just make the "french" bread in the book that came with it.

I've baked a couple of loaves. It's great. But here's my problem: It goes dry and stale very quickly; like a day or so. What do you put in to keep it moist and fresh?

I have a bread machine too, use it for "big meal" type stuff, and when the whim strikes me. Getting towards the time of year when I get more mileage out of it. Fresh bread with butter and beef stew...Mmmm...

the refrigerator works the best, wrap in sryran wrap or tuperware, will store for weeks. when ready to eat nuke in microwave for a couple of seconds. the bread has no perservatives, which is why it goes stale so fast, but is better for you and taste better.

I didnt like the fact that I had make it , the packet cost as much as a loaf of bread and to top it off I had to slice it and still was with out a baggy to store it in. jmo

Used to make sour dough all the time, still have some starter in the freezer, but the wife was noticing that my truck wasn't the only thing that was adding weight...

7 herbs? Sounds delicious, I will have to search for that.

I store mine in a gallon size Ziplock bag. I haven't had any problems keeping mine fresh. As soon as it is done cooling I pull it of the rack and bag it.
