Blackberry/AT&T help

Ordered a blackberry off ebay, and wondering if I can get away without the blackberry plan from at&t since i didnt get the phone from them. I know they can sometimes tell what phone the line has, but i can change that. They have detected my pantech duo but I just go in once a month and change it back to the K1 so they dont nail me with smartphone charges. Just want to make sure I can do the same with the new Curve. Thanks.

i thought they only tag you with the fee if you use the features...so if you wanted to recieve emails and surf the web, you would be charged, but if you just use it for the calendar, text and phone, you will be fine.

I could be wrong though.

I don't think many of the blackberry functions will work without a service plan that will allow them...

say you have a blackberry but you only have a standard phone service plan... your internet and email probbably aren't going to function. I had a problem getting my blackberry setup when I got it because my provider had not yet upgraded my services to include internet and email...

Based on what I was told, they can detect the device you're using. If you don't have the PDA data plan, but have a PDA device, they'll hit you with extra charges. I heard at one time there were some hefty surcharges they would levy if they found it, but I'm not sure.

I asked about it when I got my 8525 because I already has the unlimited data plan which was $19.95, but I had to upgrade to the $39.95. I figured unlimited was unlimited, but they make a distinction somehow.

I have the HTC 8900 (AT&T Tilt)
Other than the Unlimited family text package, I dont have a PDA package on my phone.

if you hit the AT&T forums, they mention that the pda data package and the phone package are on hte honor system

You dont have to sign up for the PDA plan, you wont be able to do picture messaging or any other internet features. You may have to manually configure your Voicemail settings.

Depending on the Blackberry, most of them you cant picture message without the PDA plan. I think you can on the Pearl but not any others.

Media net plan "may" work depending on the BB, more than likely not tho. If works DONT EVER REMOVE IT as you wont be able to add it back.
