When I first got the rifle, that's all there was. I've got about 20 rounds still loaded with Pyrodex. After that's burned up, I'm gonna try some of the newer stuff. It handles smokeless fine but that ain't no smoke.
I bought the rifle in ~1986 when several of us made a trip to Colorado. Took it and a Model 700 in 7mm Mag. Got a mulie and an elk with the Sharps. Took the elk at ~250 yds. The 450 grain broke both shoulders. We were at about 8,000 ft and it looked like it blew smoke for 50 yards. Then we had to haul that beast out.
Recoil is about like a .300 Weatherby, just takes longer. The muzzle will come up to about a 50 - 60 degree angle and just roll with it and take a step back.
Now that I have all my swaging dies, I want to get back and play with it some more, when I can slow down enough.
When I bought it the price was about $850. Look at $1600+ now.

308 is a good all-around caliber for just about everything and is inherently accurate. I own a Remington 700VS in .223 and just got a DPMS LR308. I hear that Savage and CZ have both stepped up with some accurate rifles as well. My buddy owns a Handi-Rifle in 25-06 and other than the awful trigger that it came with he likes it after tuning it up.

Here is my DPMS:
What does the DPMS setup like you have sell for??

depends on what you are going to do with it....I have a Marlin 1895 in .45-70 that when loaded with Buffalo Bore or Garret Cartridges can knock anything in the worlds dick in the dirt.....and has. Lots of kick....lots of power...huge bullet.....but most factory loads are only good for 100yds. have to go to reloads or custom ammo to get the big numbers and then only the rugers and modern Marlins are strong enough to shoot those.

Then you got your .30 caliber rifles......308, 30-06, .300 Win Mag, etc. Great ballistics...can be loaded down for varmints and up to big boned large game as needed....rounds readily available all over North America. I have a Win70 Featherlight in .308 and a Browning Stainless Stalker in .300 WinMag.

Then for anything bigger you got .338 Win Mag, .300 Weatherby Mag, .375 H&H, and the new Ruger I think is .375 as well. These are harder to find in stores...cost more per round....and unless you are very very experienced with big bores and their recoil.....might not shoot them as accurate after a few rounds.

This is just me...but you already have a huge round that is very capable in the 45-70.....I would go with .308 or .300 Win Mag if you want more distance and more downrange power at distances over 250yds.....

There are a couple other I really like the way they shoot.....but are more specialty rather than all around cartridges in my opinion...I love the 7mm-08 for long range and low recoil for light thin skinned game such as whitetail or antelope. I also like the .338 for bear, moose and elk....but recoil is an issue with my arthritic shoulders so i choose better bullet placement with what I already own rather than moving up to this one. Finally, I like the .243.....good for varmint, deer size game and target shooting.

Now if you want to talk handguns......i lke .45 colt...can be loaded as hot as your weapon can stand and if a Ruger that is pretty **** hot to rival 454 Casull. I also like .44 mag and 480 Ruger/474 Linebaugh in appropriate single action setups....for hunting.

For personal defense...I choose the .45acp and .40cal.....in Sig or Springfield weapons.

Good luck and good shooting....

i am buying some kind of single action in 45 long colt eventually, i got a .44 mag ruger super black hawk old style 3 screw model, i am probably going with a Handi cause they are insanely cheap for what kind of calibers and selections they are, i dont want some insanely expensive gun that im afraid to knock around, i actually want two .44 caliber black powder replica 1851 Navy pistols from EMF Guns, i love those beasts. my list of guns include: .44 mag ruger super black hawk old style 3 screw model with 7 3/4 barrel bought new in 1971 and i am the 2nd owner after 35 years, full stainless ruger GP100 .357 mag with 6 3/8 barrel, .45-70 H&R buffalo classic, yugoslavian SKS, probably one of the nicest SKS' ive ever seen, H&R greenwing special slightly cut down (still legal, barely) and extra full turkey choke, mercury recoil reducer in stock, you can shoot it one handed, (cuts baseball sized holes in truck doors at 15 feet) ive had that for 18 years, fox double barrel shotgun in 20 gauge i got for 50 bucks from a buddy and its a beautiful gun, winchester model 12 16 gauge my grandfathers uncle bought new in 1936, marlin 22 auto with tasco scope, i figure when im done buying guns (yeah if that will ever happen) i would like to have between 40 and 50.i will probably get my grandfathers guns on my moms side also, .410/.22 over under and i think a 12 or 16 gauge something or other, its in a cabinet upstairs at grandmas. and all the ammo i can store of course.

You might check on an AR-30 chambered in 338 Lapua. I read a article on this and I was hooked. Said it hit like a 4?? and kicked like a 223 or something like that. Had good accuracy, etc. I have the mag in my shop, been keeping it hoping to one day own one......then along came Barrett firearms......hehehe, 50 cal!! I have an SKS too, got the scope on it and that thing is great. Does pretty good at 200 yards!!!

My wife (bless her heart) bought me a Ruger M77 in .300 WM which I love. It's very nice, accurate, good fit and finish and will take any 400 pound ground hog out. It's stainless/wood stock and was priced around $600.00 (I think). There are many different bullet weights available in the 30 caliber which is one reason I wanted it.

Which Way

For UNDER $1K, you have 2 choices, and only 2 as far as I'm concerned. Savage in .308, or some sort of AR platform. That's new, not used, there are many choices as far as that goes. If you build it yourself, you might be able to put a .308 AR together, depending on the barrel, which is probably about $450 or so. But any good set of optics is about a grand in itself, in my experience at least. Good luck in your search, read all you can, then read some more. Then, no matter what you end up with, be it a Ruger 10/22, or a Barret, shoot it, shoot it, and shoot it some more. Then more and more shooting. Take notes, and shoot it some more. The best way to shoot straight is to shoot alot.

They run between 900 to 1200 depending on options. I was lucky and found this one used with 17 rounds through it.

You can build one at http://www.dpmsinc.com/ and it will give you the MSRP price.

I would check out the ROCK RIVER ARs and others sold by Eagle Firearms....they gave me the best compromise in price, options and availability if you really want an AR-15 or similar product.

Plus an Uncle Mikes nylon sling & Plano PRO-MAX injection-molded hard case. W/out doubt the best rifle value. Form. Function. Guaranteed accuracy. The .308 is an awsome caliber but if you want something big bore then the
.338 I think would be a better choice. The .338 can be had in 200-300 grain rounds and still be good for distance. The .308 for distance will probably be in the 150-180 grain round. check the balistics out. If I were out for Elk, moose, big bears I would want something much bigger than a .308. I'm not knocking some of the brands mentioned but I know RRA import some of their guns from the Philipines. I am mostly into handguns but own my share of rifles and can tell you there is a difference in quality. For instance, place a kimber next to a RRA or a S&W next to a Rossi or Taurus, Charter arms etc. and there is a difference. I have always tried to save until I could afford the better quality. Some don't care. It really depends on what you use it for. If you hunt dangerous game then a good quality bolt action rifle would be smart. If you just plink then why buy a big caliber gun shooting expensive ammo that will punish you every shot? The good thing about the .308 is ammo is cheaper and easy to find than the .338 Lapua. I own mostly big guns and now am wishing I had more .22 caliber guns to plink with, after I buy the .500 S&W. Anyway, if you think your state is bad then check out California. Some day I'll move but for now I have the Libs and people like Don Parada who tried passing a $.05 PER ROUND tax on ammo always trying to take away our guns.
