AWOL

Just a laugh for the military folks: I have the scanner on today monitoring the Ft Knox MP force. Just listened to a AWOL response. This Pvt decides to leave the training area. He called a taxi. Taxi was stopped just outside the main gate. As the MP was radioing back, I could here the Pvt yelling "I'm not in the Army anymore, I'm off post". Ya gotta figure this is one sharp individual.
Makes me wonder about some of these youngsters.

Must have scored low enough on the ASVAB to enlist in the Army! ;D We don't have anyone NEARLY that stupid in the Air Force ;)

Just the other day I heard someone complaining about how it wasn't fair that they couldn't put a split in their tongue because they worked for Uncle Sam...

What is this country coming to?

Having worn Cracker Jacks and pickle suits for approximately 34 years, 10 months, and 25 days, I have seen both ends of the intelligence scale in the military.
Had a kid that washed out of flight training at P'cola (unless they moved it again), got out of the Navy, went into the National Guard and they sent him to flight school. The only thing the Guard wanted was the DD214. This guy is so screwed up he makes Hogans Goat look squared away.
Had another that would have made an outstanding officer. He wouldn't go up before the promotion board because he would have to leave the recon platoon.
IMHO, the problem is that we have an Army of One. That one is ME and that's all. What are you going to give ME? I'm fighting the new military problem now. Got a kid that can't/won't do his job because he is too busy getting educated for free and making some extra bucks off the deal. George Quazimoto Kawangus University has a "fast track" degree program for whatever seemingly deprived background you are from. The kid spends all his time at work doing school work. Can't say or do anything due to IG/EEO/his momma/our boss attitudes. Then he has the gonades to complain that I'm not training him. Being the loving individual that I am, I pulled out his position description and showed the highlighted area where in order to be placed at this grade level, you are required to be fully trained. Boss signed off on it, not me. Let them deal with it. They created it.
We can't chew them out anymore cause they might get stressed and have to use their time out card.
I remember an old Chief by the name of Uli that explained things to me one day. The nose is still crooked, but I remember every word that was said and I try to heed every word today.
Our military today is nothing like it was 30 odd years ago. Many of our present leaders are those that got into ROTC or the Guard and Reserve to avoid the draft and possible Vietnam time. 30 years ago we still have "teachers" that remember the horrors of WW2. Now our teachers are the one that remember the "100 hours of hell" from the first gulf war.
Off the soap box, wife brought me a cup of coffee.

Hey SR, tell us what you think. ;)

But, in all fairness, let's not let the good ones be overshadowed by the 8-balls. I mean after all, there's got to be a few bright shining lights in your troop. After all, that young troop of yours whose in for the freebies, could take his paper and become an officer and then come back to your unit and be in charge.

Uh, what's the minimum time you can have to put in your retirement papers?

Whiff - Don't count on it. I've met a few in the blue who would make this yoyo look like a genius. Recruiting quotas seem to have a way of letting some real "aces" slip in. Course, that's just one man's opinion.

Re:AWOL

Dave, you hit the magic word
QUOTA,
just plain old f'ing numbers. As long as the "individual" signs on the dotted line, the recruiter has it made. It makes no difference if they s-can that person 15 minutes after he gets to boot camp.
Wearing 2 hats (AKA double dipping), I can retire at 55 with 30 years (will have 35+ at 55) and then retire from the military side at 60. Sure hope the 55 reserve retirement bill goes through.

Re:AWOL

I started this as a little of a lark, but after I thought about it, I just got more frustrated. Dave, SR you both got it right as far as I am concerned. I spent my 20 (wasn't ready to hang em up yet) and towards the last you could really look back and see differences.

Today at work, I have a FAD-1 unit in the field for their two-weeks. No big deal, but they are trying, TRYING to qualify enough gunners in the M-1 to pass their just failed look-see.

Granted, there are some new kids, but the vast majority of the unit has several years experience on this end item.

Don't get me wrong; Been in the military and would do it again. But, the whole Army of One, in my opinion, is greatly needing a swift kick. You would think that with recent past events....

Re:AWOL

I hear ya both. It's really too bad that we've been diluted with all this political correctness. I use kid around back in the 60's and 70's about all the hippies and how they were going to save us from ourselves. Well, it would appear that they snuck up on us and now we are being saved from ourselves. It's good to know that there are a few warriors left who are carrying the torch. To you, I salute you. I'm getting alittle long in the tooth to join you, shoulder to shoulder, but know at least, you've got my respect and admiration for the tasks you face day to day.

Re:AWOL

I did my 20 in the AF and was an officer in Aircraft Maintenance the whole time. I thought we had some real gomers and then I got civilianized!!!

After working in a factory on the civilian side of the stick I soon learned that the dumbest SOB I could ever dredge up in the AF was a nuclear physicist compared to some of the ones I had working for me in the factory.

Military is a good deal. Wish I'd stayed in for 30. Oh well 20 / 20 hind sight
