Asus eee-PC

I got an Asus eee-pc yesterday.

Funny little thing:

9" wide, less than 2 pounds. Runs under Linux.

I do like it, did surf the DTR, Youtube etc with it and it works good with the WLAN.

From what I've read, it looks to be a good product for those on the road because of being shock resistant, etc. How does it compare on speed, graphics, etc.?

Which model did you get? Cost?

I've got the one with the 4G flash drive and the webcam. (EeePC4G)

I do like it, battery life is good. It is rather quick and the display is sharp and bright. With 7" it's not really big, but it works nicely for surfing, watching youtube etc.
The Linux version is rather quick, naturally it can't compete with a full blown PC, but the Openoffice spreadsheet does start in 5 seconds.
All the other apps are really fast to load. (Firefox approx. 1.5 secs)
The only thing with the small memory (only 512megs) is that you should not have the browser open (and streaming some vids) while playing music and editing a spreadsheet and a text document. This makes it rather sluggish. (I think I'll upgrade it to 1 GB RAM)
The software selection already installed is nice, and since it's linux there is a lot of software to be had for free.

The price isn't too bad, I paid 300€ (approx 450 US$) and this means it's about 25% less than the second cheapest laptop that won't disintegrate if you open and close it more than 5 times.

I gotta see if I can find the link for you, a fellow went nutz and upgraded that thing by adding another flash drive to it, a gps sensor, and a few other things that made it really useful, of course he also made it real expensive in the process.

That sounds interesting. I think I might keep that one stock (or almost)

The GPS unit sounds quite nice, I'd be really interested to see where this guy put what.

Well, I got one. Similar to pictured w/ 4 gigdrive and built in web cam, only black. I haven't gotten on-line yet but so far it looks like it'll work for my trip to Portugal in May.

Need to check out the Skype feature.

With Wifi it's extremely easy, and after updating the machine you can go to networks and add a connection for example for an USB UMTS modem for a lot of providers- there are a lot of pre-configured ones.
