AOL IM (AIM) users beware....

AOL has changed its Terms of Service for AIM and now they've claimed publication rights to anything you say in chat. Use it for work and discuss proprietary information? Don't be surprised to see it published in some ad somewhere. Cybering? I'd say even AOL wouldn't stoop to such lows, but seeing this change in their TOS, who knows?

AOL AIM Terms of Service
Although you or the owner of the Content retain ownership of all right, title and interest in Content that you post to any AIM Product, AOL owns all right, title and interest in any compilation, collective work or other derivative work created by AOL using or incorporating this Content. In addition, by posting Content on an AIM Product, you grant AOL, its parent, affiliates, subsidiaries, assigns, agents and licensees the irrevocable, perpetual, worldwide right to reproduce, display, perform, distribute, adapt and promote this Content in any medium. You waive any right to privacy. You waive any right to inspect or approve uses of the Content or to be compensated for any such uses.
(Emphasis added)

Glad I don't use AOL... what next?

It's their service... they can do what they want. Check out http://www.vonnieda.org/SecureIM/. You can encrypt your conversations just requires both people to have the software.

It's not about hiding anything; I always assume chat is insecure. It's their claiming basic ownership of your words and that they can use them in anyway they see fit. That's what the big deal is.

How is this late breaking news? Just about EVERYTHING on the internet is susceptible to being compromised.

Its always been a users beware situation.
