Anyone ever pull a stump???
 

I'm about to have 10 big pines taken down and am wondering how realistic it would be for me to use my truck to yank the stumps out of the ground.

How do you hook up to the stump well enough to pull it out of the ground?

Anyone know?

Most pines that are in sandy soil are very shallow main root system if the tree is only 6" the bigger pines y'all can forget about pulling out with your truck......"you will break your truck"

I have pulled big pines by digging out around the stump then wash the roots with water to expose them.....then cut them with a chain saw and pull it out

I had a big pine stump in my front yard that I dug out with my skid steer by the time I was done I had a 6 ft deep hole to get it out

These will be ~24" pine stumps, too big to pull I guess but I thought I'd check anyway. Wish I had a big Cat dozer.

I think I'll either use a grinder or drill holes in them and pour that Stump-Out they sell into them. Not sure if that stuff works but I'll guess I'll find out.

Find a friend with a back hoe or rent one and then you can fill the holes just as easy

The backhoe I'd need for these puppies would be too big to get into the area they're in.

That Stump-Out stuff is supposed to dry them out quickly (you drill holes into the stump and pour the stuff into them), then you're supposed to pour fuel-oil into the holes, let the stump soak it all up and then light them up and burn them out.

I'll have to noodle on it for while.

A little advice from someone that has dug many stumps out with a backhoe. Cut the trees as high up the trunk as possible. This way when you try to pull, push, and, or dig them out you have a lot of leverage. Push or pull on the top. It's much easier with a six foot tall stump than a three foot tall stump.

Stump out never worked for us, we have about 18 stumps in our yard. When we hit 24 stumps, I will rent a grinder for the weekend.

Yeah, my truck has pulled a tree out too (took a couple pulls). The problem was, and almost always is, traction. Other than that, theres not much thats going to stop a Cummins. :D

What i do

I have yanked out two stumps, I make sure and dig around the area of the tree where the roots are, get moisture in there as well, and use a chain or strap long enough to pull the tree not straight, but at an angle, Yank at it, you dont need to use TQ, You can until you start digging down, but the way i did them, is i yanked at them till they were loose, at different angles, higher up on the stump creates more leverage, since the tree is coming your way..... after enough yanks it will get loose enough that you can muscle it out with the truck, one stump took me four yanks, the other took me seven.. and they were not that tall, just bout 2 foot diameter each...

I yanked on a few one time. They had been rotting for a year or so. I really jerkit, talking a little run and a jerk. Thats a ride and a half! I yanked it out though! I got to the other one, but I couldnt get it, so I had to have reinforcements...no joke...

I would have but the strap broke and put the 30' chain in the bed of my truck. It was enough to get it moving and with more water and time a Toyota pulled it. At least it wasn't the in-law 460 Ford :) . And yea leave some leverage on the stump.

i just did one at our cottage, a twin oak fell, i pulled it over with the leverage trick good, but the thing wouldnt come out till i had cut every main root that was connecting it. LAOT of weight in the bed would have helped, had all four tires spinning on the blacktop. good luck
