Any National Guard Members Here??

I believe I am going into the Guard here pretty soon. I am going to retake my ASVAB Wednesday and make sure I still qualify for the MOS I want... either 15R or 15X. Going off my past scores I will be OK but it has been 10 years since I have taken it.

I have been doing a lot of jogging and PE to try and get ready for boot camp. I think it will be a little harder since I will be 29 when I go in.

I will let you guys know how I make out. I still have the physical to go through but I should have no issues there. I actually just got an eye test at Wal-Mart and can still squint my way to a perfect 20/20

Also, what are the drills like? If I enlist now I was told I have to go to drills until I go to boot camp. I forgot to ask about that.

Do they let you take the flack jackets home?

Just remember.... if you hear of a guy in PA dying from a pencil being stabbed through the ear into the brain, it was no accident. Homicide!!

The OL is actually pretty cool about it. Yeah, she is worried but my Mom doesnt want to hear about it at all. Since the old man was in Vietnam and she was married to him during that time she knows what war can do to a man. He was a door gunner on a HH-3E staying on the Hornet in the Navy. Its very hard to get him to talk about what he did... I just wish I could know more about what the old man did.

Plus Mom says I am too much of a marshmallow to go through boot camp

You already went through basic 10 years ago, but you have to go in again?

No, I went through the physical and everything. The job I was supposed to go into was suddenly not available and my recruiter was horrible. He tried to push me into jobs I really didnt want just because they were open. I have always felt with a decision that important, you better sleep on it. The physical was good for a year they told me. He as so mad he cussed me outside and I had to get my own ride home. All in all, a horrible experience.

Check out this bribery for the old lady I just went to go get.

Oh ok, I see. I've dealt with a lot of recruiters, some better than others. But the one you describe sounds like a major...you know what.

Good luck with your training. It will be a good time.

Took the ASVAB today. They do a quick grade there and I scored a 85. As soon as I got done with the test the recruiter was pacing back and forth. I kept telling him its been 10 years since high school and I was pretty rusty. I was playing with him.... kept telling him I bombed the test.

The lady called me in and gave me a slip of paper to show him. I came out of the room with a sad face and told him I bombed it. I said I was too humiliated to show him the results. I worked that for about 3 mins before he found out the truth. It will take until Friday for the individual line scores but I should be able to do what I want with that score.

Going to come and work on Apache's huh, best job and best airframe.... (thou I am slightly biased)..

You will really enjoy anything in the 15 series. Whether its crew-chief (R) or armament (X).

Do you fly, or work on them? I would love to be a pilot but I really cant afford to go through 4 years of college on what they are going to pay right now.... and I do not think I would qualify.

One thing I am worried about is I dont want to be a parts changer. Where I am employed now, I pretty much troubleshoot everything for my shift and then assign the jobs to the competent mechanics. I would like to do something similar with the troubleshooting when I am ready with enough experience and training. I think thats where armament would be better. I like electronics T/S and that looks like what it involves. I really wish my recruiter could tell me more about the jobs other than the 2 min. video they have

94K would be right up my alley but I dont know whats involved with the security clearances. I have had some minor mishaps around 18 with the law and I already have to get misdemeanor waiver for being young and stupid I never even brought it up because I figured it would be even more difficult to get into.

I fly them.

There is troubleshooting involved with both jobs, thou you are correct with X's do a bit more... but they also do a decent amount of part changing. As a you R will do a lot of work before being a lead crew-cheif, especially in the guard..

And there is no college degree requirement to be warrant officer, of which most army pilots are.

I really think I want to do this full time once I get up to e3-e4. Then with the pay I could afford to drop my other job. Like I said, I would LOVE to fly but I am not getting my hopes up. I was able to squint my way to 20/20 with a vision test I have this **** criminal conspiracy hanging on my record, and I do not know how much that would hold me back. I dont want to get my hopes up, but the recruiter said about working my way up to a WO would give me the ability to fly.

It certainly will not hurt to try, the worst they will do is say no..

Full time in the guard is the best thing going.

If it's in you records you should have put it on the app. You may get a visit from your friendly FBI agent. I'm an E-8 in the Air Guard and have seen it happen.

Good Luck with your Military career!

No... thats not what you are thinking. I reread that and I can see where I could have sounded misleading. I told them everything. Speeding tickets and all. I didnt bring up the thought of becoming a WO and flying. I just figured it was out of the question.

Sorry I misread ya
Hope it all works out for you. I'm getting ready to retire from full time Guard and have been looking at what's available outside. It all about helicopters, especially in the Aerospace and Defense contractor world. Many jobs for mechanics.
