Anti-theft crap
Anti-theft crap
So I have a 2010 ram 1500 for the better half to drive. Yesterday she locked the keys in the truck. She calls a locksmith out to make a new key which he does. Everything is fine until today and she calls saying the dash lights are coming on and off and what not. She brings it to me to look at then when she trys to leave it wont start. So I look at it and I figured the anti theft had been triggered. I call one dealership the one I bought it from and they say leave the key on for 15 min and that reset it. I do that and low and behold it starts, but you cant get it out of park. I call another dealership just to see if they really know whats going on. This dealership tells me that there is nothing you can do and I need to call roadside assistance and have it towed in. So after an hour of unhooking the battery and what not I decide to call roadside , they come pick it up now its off to the dealer. The thing that is frustrating is the fact that even on small things like that it has to be taken in to fix. Luckily its under warranty. They have us right were they want us. Lets make a vehicle that sells for 40k which is outrages, and then make em so that when they break they have to bring em in and we get to charge again to fix something simple. Ok sorry rant over. btw does anyone know how to fix the issue without taking it to the dealer. I tried unhooking the battery and also tried leaving the key in the on position for 15 minutes to reset it.

You may be able to pull the relay for the security system. I don't know how imbedded it is with the engine computer though. I know that's how you used to could around it with the cars if you put a scrapyard ECM in to send yours off for a performance reprogram.
Don't use the spare non-Chrysler key in the ignition. I think after three tries to start it with the non-chipped key, it locks up and has to go in to be reset.
I told a dealer if they would had a truck on the lot that didn't have that big abortionate POS key that you couldn't fit two of in your pocket if you had really big pockets, I'd consider looking at it. That's the same day they gave me 3 keys for my 90.

Did the newly cut key get programmed to match the other two? Or is it just a dummy key? 1500's in Canada get 4 keys. Two dummy door keys, and two keyless entry keys with the door key inside. I don't think those ST work trucks do get 4 though. Not sure.
Could getting it out of park be a separate problem? I've read that it is a minor issue with some 1500's, and on many older Durangos/Magnums. Lack of lubrication on that solenoid pin?

I wish they would make a vehicle that you can start with a dumb key. I like to carry two sets with me, and I don't know that I could fit two "smart" keys in my pocket. At least without breaking them.
