Another Computer problem

Sorry for another computer problem guys....but Im stumped and was wondering if some of the computer guys on ere know what the problem is....

I have lost both my CD rom and burner...can not access either or even see them from Windows Explorer.

From Microsoft System Information:

Standard Floppy Disk Controller
This Device Has a Problem: Code=10 (0xA)
This device is not present, not working properly, or does not have all the drivers installed

Primary IDE controller (dual fifo)

Secondary IDE controller (dual fifo)
This Device Has a Problem: Code=10 (0xA)

I havent had much in the way of hardware problems in a few years so am a bit rusty.

Machine is a PII 400 Mhz running Win 98 (first edition).

Not sure how to reinstall the drivers if I cant access either CD rom....having the machine backed up prolly would have been handy eh??

Anyone have any ideas??...Id really appreciate any info. Thanks.

Is the disk controller built into the motherboard, or in a plug in slot.

If not sure, open the computer (which you'll have to do anyway) and follow the ribbon cable from the drives (both floppy and CD) and see where it attaches.

If the latter, pull the card, blow some air into the connectors, reseat card.

Windows should see the controller and automatically put it back into service.
(I think?)

If built into the motherboard,
all is lost, time for a "real" computer with a "real" operating system.

I "lost" my IDE controller a couple times back in my old win98 computer and this usually fixed it.

What kind of computer is it. When you FIRST boot up, you should get a prompt to be able to go into the bios, should be something like a F1 or Tab key, when in there, you can tell it where to boot from first, second, and so on and also config the other stuff. If you have an original CD that came with it, turn the computer on, let it boot, install the cd and see if you can reload the drivers. If I was you, I'd spring for the XP upgrade, although it'll slowdown the booting somewhat, and doing the upgrades for XP is LONG without DSL, but all upgrades for win98 is fixing be non existent. My laptop at the shop is only a 400mg hz, and I can take a wiz and drink a cup of coffee while it boots, it's got XP, but it found all the new stuff I installed and configured it to run. If you have a bunch of old drivers that aren't XP cool, you should be able to go to the original manufacturers website and download the upgrades.
Or if all else fails, just get you a new hard drive, XP and start over, it ain't all that hard, crap if I can do it, ANYONE can just make copies on disk of the stuff you want to save. My shop computer does not have cd burner so I use 250mg zip disk and also have 128mg little bitty thing that plugs into usb port that I carry in my pocket, it's great to go to a customer and pop this in their computer and show them pictures of their pumps before and after.
