Amp and Sub problem

The other day i was playin music for a long time and then turned it off and had the piaa lights on for atleast 2 hrs. When i started the truck it seem a little weaker than normal but still fired right up. Bout a minute into the ride home my sub stops workin. So i pulled over and i was checkin the wires because i was movin stuff behind my seats the other day but all the wires were good. I turned the truck off and then back on it work for a minute and stoped again. So i turned the head unit off and back on a minute later and it worked for about 3 minutes and went off. I did that like 5 more times and then it decided to stay on for the rest of the ride home. Yesterday I had the same problem. But the last 15 or 20 minutes of my drive it stayed on. When the sub stops workin the amp is still powered up but im not shure where to look now but all the wires are fine. Any help please im gettin frustrated.

Only reason I can think of the subs going on and off are:
1) Either a loose connection somewhere, give them all a wiggle
2) Amp is overheating, make sure it is getting enough air, they will turn off t a certain temperature

kinda sounds as if the amp is getting hot and safely turning itself off
do you have stuff ontop of it?
really the only thing i can think of at the moment

How hot does the amp feel touching it?? It sounds like it's getting to hot and going into safe mode and shutting down........I've had a couple amps do that when I've been pushing them too hard......the amp will stay on but it cuts all power to the subs for a period of time to cool itself down..........

Its not getting hot at all. This is happening right now when i first start the truck or turn music on . It was sittin all day yester day and when i started it last night it was about 60 out so thats how warm the amp was when i started it. As for the conections i went over all of them and they are all snug and good.

So the music still plays through your other speakers.......just nothing going through the subs right?? It's more than likely something wrong inside the amp, it be a slim chance that there is something wrong with the subs to make them not work AT ALL....

Do you have another amp to just hook up for testing purposes?? Or maybe go to your local stereo shop and see if they can test it for you....

Well I finally figured it out. One of the rca jacks goin into the head unit was loose where the wire and the tip come together. All is good now we are jamin again. Thanks for the ideas tho.

while we're on this subject, i have the same problem in my '57. my sub will cut out like dieselrob's. guess i need to pull the head unit and see if there are any loose wires. I dont think i have the special "tools" that come with the head unit to pull it out. any other way to get to the back side of it?

Well if there is no way to get behind it, it may be a little tricky.........there is usually 2 metal strips that come with the stereo to slide in and release the clips. If you have a local stereo shop, run over there and tell them what brand stereo you have and they may have a few laying around you could borrow for a few seconds.....

Either that or find the thinnest pieces of metal you possibly can and try to rig up something that will slide in there.........doesn't have to be anything special, just enough to pop the clips out

I know how that goes, you never need them when they are just laying around in your truck and in your way...........but the second you take them little boogers out they vanish.......not like that has ever happened to me of course
