Adventure Based Colorado Road Trip

Hey, I will be trailering my Cherokee out to the San Juans of Silverton/Ouray, CO for a weeks' worth of fun filled adventure and 4wheeling starting July 24th, and wanted to see if anyone on here knows the area and wants to meet up to have some fun!!!!!!!! Even if you don't know the area and want to join in just chime in and let me know. I'll be heading out from Memphis,TN on I-40 to Albequarkee , then taking US-550 up to Silverton. I can meet anyone along the way and caravan up.

Make sure ya do some sightseeing on the way ... those are my old stompin grounds nearby !!

Mesa Verde in Cortez, Co. is very impressive as are the huge rock formations near Shiprock, NM.
Oooooh .... and no trip is complete without a stop in Dove Creek, Co. too ... absolutely nothing to see there, but at least you can say that you have been to the Pinto Bean Capital of the World !!! (and where I came from ).

Are ya gonna ride the train to Durango from Silverton ?? That is one thing that I haven't done yet but will someday. Stop by the Bar-D ranch in Durango for some great food and entertainment !!

If you haven't 4-wheeled up there before, you are in for a real treat !!! Truly God's country up there. Have fun and be safe !!

Have a good trip out there, lot to see and do. The Silverton-durango train ride is a seni ride. Wander around Silverto, then back to Durango. Have two kids that live near Aspin CO and have done some sight seeing. Have a great trip. On the way Mesa Verde is worth a stop
Have a great trip.

Try colorado4x4.org. Go to the staging area and let them know you're coming. 4x4trials.net could help you find some trails too. Have fun!

It has been a long time since I was in the area, but Yankee boy is a great day trip out of Ouray. Not real technical, but the scenery is great. Ophir is a great trip from Silverton into Telluride and I think Ophir was another favorite.

Yeh, so far I have the "Alpine LOOP", Blackbear(into Telluride), then back over Immogene as must do!!! Do some hiking up to the Ice Lake basin, and drive up to Clear lake as well as Yankee Boy.

I racked my brain last night trying to remember the name of those two trails. They are both great.

Be sure to go up on Engineer Pass and come down on Cinnemon Pass. Also, check out some of the old mine shafts and do a little trout fishing while you're up there. Really neat place, but a lot more crowded than it used to be.

Yeh, I also like that route of the "Loop". This is not my 1st time there, so I'm hoping to find some of the lesser known places seldom seen by others. Mineral basin just off Engineer Rd. is a great place to look for quartz crystals, and off in the middle of the meadow, is a odd placed tombstone describing how a miner tried going into Silverton on Christmas Eve and never made it. His body was found in the spring where the tombstone is placed.

If you don't do another thing, RIDE THE DURANGO and SILVERTON TRAIN.

Worth every penny, and more.

Also, in Silverton, be sure and take the gold-mine tour where you ride back in a mine on a mine-train.

Also, tour the stamp/roller/ball gold mill that is on the same road as the gold-mine tour.

All this stuff, you will have to drive your vehicle to, as the train schedule will not allow enough time to get it done; but, it is well worth it.

We were in Silverton last July and it was pouring the snow, very chilly.

Pistol: We hunt just east of there every year up on the Glade. Manage to pick up some Anasazi Beans to bring back to Texas when there.
