318cid engine help

Does anyone have a way to remove the distributor drive gear on a 318cid? I tried just reaching in with a good long pair of needle nose pliers but it keeps slipping so I can't get a good grip. All I need to do is lift it enough to rotate it a tooth or two. Any ideas? Gotta love friends that say "All ya' gotta do is..."

Get locking needle nose pliers...

Or a very small vice grip wrench...

Get a good amount of force, maybe even use a larger set of pliers to close the handle, it should be able to grip it enough to make the turn...

Wrap electrical tape around the needle nose pliers first, just about 3 wraps...

Can't you swap the wires forward or back 1 tower to get the amount of advance/retard you are looking for?

Not to be a smart alec, but you are turning it as you lift it, right? Bevel cut gear teeth so it won't lift straight out.

AND it drives the oil pump, so you want to be sure that is turned to line up as well, or it will be impossible to get the drive gear seated all the way. This can be QUITE frustrating, trust me.

If you take a big flat tip screwdriver and rotate it as you lift you can turn it one tooth at time. Just did it about a month ago.
