Wish they would have had a better picture or cutaway of the EPS. I had always wondered why nobody had used one before.
Maybe in a few years we will see some after market units for our older trucks.

Wow that is putting an awful lot of faith in electronics, how long do they program these vehicles to last before the systems start to shutdown and mimic a mechanical failure?

ATV (4-wheelers) mfg's have been using EPS as well as some newer yamaha snowmobles are using EPS in their line up. Can-am )Ski-doo)came out with a "2-stage" EPS for their ATV's. hit a switch & you can choose a slower EPS or a fast easy EPS..I believe the design is new but somewhat well proven!!

Electric power steering is nothing new. Nissan used it on the later model 300zTT cars for the rear wheel steering.

We've been running airplanes, big machinery, etc by wire for some time. If there's a way to screw it up, Chrysler will find it.

My old draftsman was an airforce mechanic. the planes today fly by committee. there are three flight computers on board. the pilot makes a request and as long as two of the three computers agree, the request is accepted.
He also said that one of the early "high tech" fighters had a feature I would like to see implemented. None of the controls moved. they were pressure sensitive and rigidly mounted. Yeah, it went over about like you would expect, but the fact that none of the controls actually moved screwed up pilots.

What kind of a redundant system is there for when your electronic steering fails? does it go into limp mode followed by the driver?

I thought the newer trucks already having problems with dead throttles?

How about GPS induced DEATH?

If I did not know any better I might have listened to the GPS and got onto the freeway headed into the wrong way traffic, but I would have stopped because the live traffic update said I would crash 1 minuet later.

Told me to turn LEFT and to turn RIGHT at the next corner from the street that I was not on.

This one actually had me zipping through the hills next to the freeway at 68 MPH

I have taken it back to Best Buy and after they first denied it could happen, they now cannot explain it.

So yes I could see the onboard GPS messing with your life.

Yamaha has been running EPS on their Apex sleds and quads for a few years. My dad has a 2011 Apex and its truly amazing how well it works. The slower you go the easier it is to turn. If you did not know it had EPS you would never know it is so passive. It makes the sled feel about 60 pounds lighter than it is.

Even if the electric steering goes out you can still steer, its just electric assist instead of hydraulic.

Yep, still a mechanical connection, not at all uncommon in vehicles these days
