2003 Jeep Liberty...worth a darn????

I've found a neat little '03 Liberty 4x4 with the 3.7L and the price is doable. Does anyone know anything about the gassers? Do the motors have a timing chain or belt? My plan is to sell my '01 goat, buy this outright for my wife and then I'll get her '03 . Its a win-win as long the Liberty isn't junk. Oh yeah, what kind of mileage do they get?

I've been doing some research and there are several folks talking about sludge in the engines. I assume its because of low grade oil and short trips but to hear them talk it just happened even with them changing the oil every 3K. Anyone hear of this problem or is it like having a VP truck...just waiting....

High rate of roll overs, 14mpgs (16 on a good day) but a peppy V6 and the full-time 4wd option are nice.

In-laws have one.

Have to argue about the roll overs.. wife has ditched hers.. rutted road, ran off into the median, twice. She gets an average of 18mpg. I can get 22 when I drive it.
Not a big fan of them, seats are not very comfortable, at least for me. The 3.7 6 cyl is like most v6 motors, gotta rev the heck outa them to get any power. Like the old 4L straight 6 better. For a commuter it is ok, more of a "chick" suv in my opinion.

hope that helps

oh yeah, over 80k, had it since new

We have a 2009 we bought in August of last year so I don't know if I can speak to the 03 models, but for what it's worth, we've put almost 30,000 miles on it so far and 0 problems, acceptable mileage, (in the low 20's), reasonable comfort and I haven't felt uncomfortable about it being a rollover hazard.

My parents have an 05 renegade with the 3.7L. It's been pretty good to em, but not w/o a couple issues. The driver's door howls a little bit at higher speeds. They had a rocker arm come loose a few months ago. I'll totally agree that the seats are terrible, but it is a Jeep afterall. I drove it from Ohio to eastern VA, and I could not feel my butt when I got out, and that was stoppin every 2-3 hours. Fuel mileage isn't the greatest, either, but not bad.

Good to hear guys...thanks. I'll call about it tomorrow and see how far I can lowball them and if the price gets down there we'll go for a test drive. So far the wifey is on board but we'll see how she likes it once she's behind the wheel.
