$105 for a oil change at a Quickie Lube?

Goodness. wife going on vacation, was gonna get the oil changed.

i asked the guy was he lying or joking me, he said no, they do them all day for $105.

i backed out & left.

bought 6 gallons of oil & a fuel filter for $90 from NAPA.
had a oil filter,

do did oil & fuel last nite, and still have oil for next time.

Rotella comes in a 3 jug case now, that is really nice.
you can put the empty jugs back in the case, with the lid off,

and dump the used oil back in them, without having to get the wife to hold the empty jugs.

They even charge $105 for small cars that only take about 4-5qts? Thats a scam right there.

Atleast you did it by your self, fells much better that way. And if something were to go wrong you could learn from your mistakes.

I payed 105 last week at our local tire and lube place you mentioned you spent 90 and didnt have to buy the filter. Your time is worth something Id rather part with 15 more dollars and not have to lay in the mud and do it my self. If I had a four post lift now that would be a different story.

i paid $90 for enough oil for 2 changes.

our trucks use 3 gallons, they are 11~15 bucks each,
so that's $45 for oil,
and ~10 for a oil filter (i haven't ever bought a single filter at a parts place)

that's $55 vice $105
or, if you look at doing it twice, that's 110 vice $220

Yep, went to the dealer for my first oil change and wont go back... $97

They now keep sending me coupons that say Diesel truck oil change $59.95 up to 12 Quarts... but small print at bottom says Diesel trucks may have additional charges or something... still wont go back - at least when I do it myself I know it is getting done right.

When I had my gasser, I used to go to a place that charged 30.
They also checked all the fluids and topped off if necessary.
Also checked tire pressure.
Nice thing was I was in and out in about half an hour.
I may see what they charge for a diesel now.
The only reason I have it done is I dont have the setup for doing it.

Its still $20 or $30 for small cars, but they like seeing us guys pull up to the bay, they make a killing on diesels. Figure it costs them about $30 worth of oil and filter (even thats way high I'd be willing to bet) and takes them 25-30minutes to finish the job...So, maybe $10 worth of labor. That means it costs them $40 and they charge $105. $65 profit ain't bad if you can do it a couple dozen times a day. You can't blame them...a lot of people actually pay that to have it done, because they're time is worth more than that to them. For the 20 minutes it takes me I'll save $50.

What setup do you need? Its a wrench, a filter wrench (if you need it) and a bucket or 2. A piece of cardboard maybe, but thats creature comforts man! I've changed my oil in -15*F weather, if it saves me $50 that means I can buy enough beer to forget about ever being cold!

Your time is a wash and should not be in the calculation as you have to sit the waiting room while they do the oil change. So you still are out the 30-40 minutes of your life.

Do it your self and save the oil. Filter it a couple of times and add it to the tank at 1 gallon a fill up. Your return on investment is much greater that way.

very good point about the time being lost, either way.

i was running my used oil in my 2004.
something went wrong in the fuel system,
so i have not been running in the 2006, but i don't have a filter set up either,
i just put a t-shirt (should have bought some cheese cloth?) over the funnel, and caught any chunks that way.

Go out and buy a 5 micron pocket filter, strain it through that and you'll never have to worry about it again.

3 gallons of oil(Mobile Delvac 1300 Super) at less than $7/gallon at Wal-Mart and one Fleetguard filter from the local Cummins dealer and I'm out of an oil change for like 30 bucks...
