When "chains are required" if you have 4x, you don't have to have them.

But will chains be any safer than just 4x?

Depends on many factors, such as incline and load. I have gone through many mountain park roads that suggest chains with no problem. If you are towing something moderately heavy, I would suggest using them as weather warrants. I have used chains on mud roads too for added traction.

Conditions were so bad last winter on the residential roads here I installed chains all around on my 2001. WOW incredible traction but one draw back was on bare pavement they would shake the truck to pieces at very low speed.

Just to add on the 2011 SRW they say not to install chains on the front as there is not enough clearance, rear only.

Not true here.......they are required on any vehicle........just put them on the front of a 4x4.

I find chains are a pain in general. I run in 4x4 until I cant go any farther then I'll chain up. For the tread pattern I run chains make ice much safer for me. Chains work great and I have a good set that are rated for 45mph I just hate putting them on and taking them off. I only spool the front end to back out of a bad situation and never to keep plowing foreword. So in the end it depends on the conditions, where I am, where I'm going, and what I'm driving on.
