gears?

currently have 3:73's. I did order my truck with 4:10's but thats another bucket of sh**.

I have 37's on now...and ordered some 40's for the spring. But I worry about my gears....

My truck is a mall crawler really...it has seen the occasional mud puddle...but nothing a stock truck couldnt do.

Should I change the gears? If so...4:10 or 4:56??

I am ready and willing to fork out the cash to change them...but rather not if I dont need to. I have heard the horror stories of idiots putting big tires on and then weeks later crying about the $$ to fix things after. I was told Im ok since I have a CTD...but this was a jeep driver. They cant be trusted

Auto or manual? Auto I would change gears, but with a manual you can select the best gear.

Remember...all show and no go here. Im not taking my truck in some mud bog, offroad trails. Its Price tag is still VERY fresh in my mind lol

40's...i would have to say 4.56's at least, even with the torque of the cummins.

i think your following me around!!

you wish!

Hi btw! Of course you'd say 4:56's I think I knew the answer to my question before I asked it. I can just think of 9487948 things Id rather spend a 1000. on

Good thing my lift and tires wont be in for awhile...Id be too tempted to put them on before changing the gears.
The tires are actually 39.5...still change the gears?? :PP jk

Tires that big need at least 4.30s, imo-- 4.56 would be about right, even for a mall cruiser.

With 40s, you're looking at 4.88s or 5.13s for "real" offroaders.

So 4.56s are good poser gears

Mindy,

With your auto and stock tires which are/were roughly 31" tall, your rpm in OD @ 60 mph with 3.73's was roughly 1650 rpm. 39.5's which usually come in at 39" max are allowing a cruising rpm @ 60 mph of 1312 rpm - not acceptable to me and regardless of the power add ons, it will turn the truck into a dog since no power adder can change the minimum efficient cruising rpm. 4.56's will allow for a cruising rpm of 1604 rpm at 60 mph - much better considering all the additional rolling resistance and large increase in rotational weight regardless of the additional run out. If performance is a priority, I would even suggest 4.88's which will allow for a cruising rpm @ 60 mph of 1716 rpm.

Regardless, I would agree with Hohn and recommend a gear change to at least 4.56's.....anything less will not help enough to warrant the cost.

Well, this poser is getting 4:56's

My 04 Hemi with 35's and a 3inch body lift was no poser tho...That saw lots of trails and mud bogs. It was alot of fun.

But with my new truck...Id rather be a poser and NOT offroad a 60gs+ truck Not that rich...

This is the first ive heard of big gears. No rear or "true" (without ginding to make the chevy unit fit) lockers either. I mean its been a while aftermarket. GET ON IT ALREADY.

An auto could very well be diffrent. I have 2 identical trucks except for gears. one has 4.10's and one has 3.55's. I run 39" tires on the 4.10 truck and im thinking of going up to 43's because the gears are way to tall. Power was never an issue even with 3.55's I can smoke the 39's. I also dont know that you'll break anything except possibly your auto. With tires that heavy id think a new TC and valve body would be on the list before gears. If I didnt have an airlocker in my front diff that 4.10 truck would have been turned into 3.73's or 3.55's allready
