Any Dually guys set up for offroad?
 

I know its not really practical to wheel a dually, but I didnt know if anyone here did, or if they were setup to offroad. I dont mean big lifts and tires with tire shine all over them, but truly set up rigs. Ive never seen one, nor heard of it really, but wasnt sure, and thought I would check. Also, mudding doesnt really count to me, cuz you can go mudding in a freakin tractor trailer if you want, but Im interested in more of a trail rig/ rock crawling type...Moab type setups...thanks guys.

A set of triple rail tires chains for the rear and regular chains up front and that dually will go anywhere you point it.

ha..im sure. I had to help pull a guys ride out of his backyard the other day, put it in 4Lo, and just let off the brake and it started yankin...so Im sure it would...

I dont have a dually, but I have driven them and seen them in serious off road situations. The USFS, BLM and other assorted fire agencys that provide wildland suppression always have 1-ton dually brush trucks with slip-in fire units on them. And the Gov. Employees in their Govt. rig go places I wouldn't try in a SRW rig. And they pay the price, Seen a lot of duals ripped open on skinny rocky roads/trails, and guys always manage to get a rock wedged in between the rear tires, and pop em both! They are just to wide for alot of old mountain roads that were pushed with old D-2 & D-4 CAT's with 6-8' blades. Add to that years of side debris and those trails really narrow up, and we all know that fires start in the darndest places. The larger 4 door International 4x4's have trouble as well. The best dually set up for off road I have heard of, is going with a super-single rear tire, and not caring about the fender's to much [laugh] I have never seen any other rigs that would qualify as a dually set-up for off road. The govt rigs have beefy toyo tires and good clearance for a 4x4 1-ton but they just can't handle the narrow/ sharp stuff. Same problem with the Hummer H1, everybody wanted one for their department, until they tried pushing em down goat trails with sheer walls. suckers have great off-road capabilitys on the open stuff but they are just to wide!

Thanks for your input man...Good info. I totally understand what you mean about narrow trails, etc, and wouldnt really expect much out of a dually in tight spots. Thats why I was wondering about Moab type setups, where there is plenty of room, but still some gnarly offroading. I guess if you started getting into the squeeze, you could fashion up some sort of sliders around the dually fenders...that would be kinda cool..ha. Thanks for the info again man...

If I was going to set up a dually for off-raod it would be a single cab and I would bob the bed to the end of the spring shackles, plus lots of lift, the main problem with all of these 4 door long bed 4x4's is that they high-center on everything! Cant count the number of tube steps Ive seen that bend up and touch the body in the middle [dummy].

Don't know if you have seen this one before... Not a true 3500 dually, but.. He appears to mud it and do some pretty technical rock sections.

I can't see the above link because work blocks out PS.com, but it is probably SuperHawk's truck which is a converted 1500 into a 2500 with dual rear wheels, rockwells, a Cummins 12v, stacks, etc..... He wheels the crap out of that thing!

My dad had a 93 ext cab dually 4x4 cummins five speed. We took it to eagles peak on the llano river and wheeled it all day long. got a lot of funny looks but we never got stuck. Pulled out my uncle in his 2001 ext cab dually 4x4 5speed. But that ol 12 valve lead the way.

just to say, that black dually looks familiar. I did a google search for it and he actually lives two towns over. its a small world.

iv done some light wheeling with my dually, nuthing too crazy but a lot for a 9 1/2 ft wide truck...most recently i did some "on road wheeling"

Thats pretty cool. I wouldn't have done it in a 3rd gen though,unless you have deep pockets, those hips on the back wont last long. But way awesome! Shows what you can do with a dually for sure! :D
