OT: Woodworking and routers
 

Anyone here know how to use a router? I just bought a Hitachi router and need someone to just so the ins and outs of this router.

I've never seen anyone use one, other then on TV, and I've never used one, but I wanted one. Now that I have it, I have no idea how to even set it up properly. [duhhh]

I hope there's someone here that can help.

Practice, practice, practice. Bottom the bit out in the chuck, then have fun routing a bunch of scrap wood until you get the results you want. For really detailed work you may want to add a table (router mounts upside down underneath), but for just rounding corners, etc.. freehand is fine. Honestly, just play with it, you'll get it down pretty quick.

Google "Router Workshop" and bring up some of their PBS TV shows. They give lots of tips for using a router. I've used several routers over the years and still found valuable info there.

Dang Bobby that money's just burning a hole in your pocket isn't it. If ya got too much i'll take it off your hands.

Maybe I should say I could use the router, but it cames with these "parts" and I have no idea why I might even need them. I can change the bits with the wrenches and figure out the adjustments, but what the heck are these rings?

You might tell me to read the instruction manual, but since I don't know the name of the parts, I don't know what the heck I'm reading.

Anyone live in Cecil/Harford/Balto County that could tell me when and why as to these parts?

Depending on what the "rings" look like, they may be router table inserts. These are one or two rings without much else, maybe 1/4" thick. Post up a pic or two of what ya got and maybe we can help more.

Thanks all.. I went down to see Travis and he went over the router with me. I've got a pretty good idea on how it works now. I'm also in the process of making a date to head over to Cherry Works for them to go over actual usage.
