What to get?
 

Hey all, I just sort of wandered in here. I've known about this site for some time but I'm just now planning to buy a Ram 2500 so I can use some advice. I've normally ignored the oil burners since my old truck was doing just fine. It's getting tired and I figure to get something that has a little more grunt for towing. I'm also looking for economy and durability.

What I'm looking for is a diesel (or course) and I'm pretty fluid on what I'm looking for. A few details like tilt, cruise and air but otherwise what ever is out there. Preferences include 4X4, OBD II diagnostics (I think that started for oil in '97) and a manual transmission. 4X4 because I do use it, OBD II because it's just easier to track problems and manual some my mooching relatives won't be able to borrow it. (They're too lazy to learn a clutch.) If an older style truck is a good one for what I need, I'll consider them too.

One restriction is I can't use dual rear wheels. I have a large tract in Forrest Reserve and can only cull trees every few years. A dually won't fit down my main trail. Yes, the Conservation Officers do check to make sure I'm not cutting trees. I won't rule out older stuff but I really don't know what I'm looking for. Any suggestions?

'97 and newer is anywhere from 12 valves to Common Rail Cummins Turbo Diesels.

Everyone has their favorites. This place is a treasure chest of knowledge, but will require some extensive reading to gain the answers you have questions about.

My suggestion is to read as much as you can about each generation and ask questions as you form them.

You will become knowledgeable enough to know what to look for when shopping for your new truck that it will become a no brainer as to what will best suit your needs.

Welcome to the website! Alan has already given you some good info and I only add to stay away from the 1998.5-2002 Dodge CTD 2nd Gen 24-valves as the VP-44 fuel pumps on those year trucks can be a problem. I have owned four (4) Dodge CTD Pickups and the 2002 that I had with the VP-44 fuel pump was the worst one I have ever owned.
