wife put gas in my 05 cummins

I just got a phone call from my wife, she said she accidentally put 30+ gallons of gasoline in the truck, drove it around the block, and parked it back at the gas station. What exactly do I have to do to fix this. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

With 30+ gallons in it, the tank will have to be drained, refilled with diesel and (for good measure) I'd throw a quart of ashless 2-cycle oil or other lubricity additive in it since gasoline basically has no lubricity. Drain the fuel filter housing as well.

Thanks Rusty, any issues with refilling the filter housing or priming that you know of? BTW I love your bike.

I did it to my powerstoke several years ago. I was in 8ft of snow and went to a BP with the 'green' handles and bam 30 gallons. Truck had 1100 miles on it at the time. Now over 80 and never a hiccup.

I also did the same thing i drove out of the parking lot and back into it and parked.

Siphoned out everything I could. I bought 6 of the red 5gallon cans. filled up 5.5 from siphoning.
Then filled the truck with the proper fuel 'another green handle'. I have never looked back.

After filling the tank with diesel and draining the fuel filter, make sure the filter lever is closed and just bump the starter. Don't let the engine start. Wait 30 seconds and turn off. Do one more cycle and it should start.

I agree on changing the fuel filter. I always just put some diesel fuel in the filter housing after I change the filter. I has worked good so far. I would tell her shes done driving that truck. I dont let anybody drive my truck. only ppl who have diesels thats it. Ive almost done it mistakes happen. with fuel prices those mistakes can be costly. fuel is like gold to ppl now. it is about $2 a gallon to high.

Thanks for all the help guys, I think we can fix this without too much problem. The bad part is my wife is in Reno and I'm at work 80 miles away so I can't even get to it til tonight. And thanks for the other advice, but she really is a keeper, so I'm keeping the truck and the wife. She is just sick about it, crying and everything. Thanks again and be safe out there.

Hey, at least she realized it. I have heard of more people that that who have driven off and not realized it until the truck helped them. I have also stopped a couple of people from putting diesel in their gas cars. It's funny now because at the station that I go to they have the pumps combined. I have seen a couple of people trying to figure out how to get the pump to come on when they grab the wrong hose.

cindy is brown nosing the new folks again.

my wife does not drive my truck because I dont believe that she will pay attention to the differences between a gas and diesel powered vehicle. Dont replace her, just take her key.

you will need to drain the tank, change the filter, and add a fuel treatment to it.
