Where to buy APPS?

I just tried cleaning the APPS per the instructions on the Cummins forum site. Big mistake! Now I have no APPS at all. Truck will start and idle but that's all. I had done this procedure with my 12v and it worked fine.

NAAPA has one for a manual, but not even a listing for the automatic. Even the one for the manual they would have to order with no idea when they would actually have it.

Does anyone know anywhere else I can try other than the dealer? Or does anyone have used they want to part with? This is my work truck, and without it I can't work.

Whoa! At that price you'd be better served to buy at your dealer. I replaced mine last summer and my cost including tax at the dealer was $300.43. My dealer does happen to be the wholesaler for the area, but you can certainly do much better than the near $400 price tag above.

Naapa just quoted me 470 for the wrong one (manual tranny). I assume the difference is in the linkage that isn't needed anyway, I just need to replace the switch.

Being a Saturday I can't call the dealer for a price but a friend had previously told me he paid over 500 for his at the the dealer. Needless to say I would much rather pay 300. Does your dealer ship? And if so who are they?

Hoesli lists two different switches but doesn't say the difference. I am assuming that the manual doesn't need the TV linkage and that's the difference, but as all I need is the switch I can chunk what I don't need. Am I right?

What really stinks about this is that I am supposed to move on 100 miles away on Monday. So I am not just out of work, I can't move. Really rotten timing.

Go over to the TDR site, look for posts for APPS Sequel a guy named Gary has done alot of research on this subject. He and someone called timbo have some very reasonably priced. Just my .02 cents. Thanks Steve B.

Just need to vent a little. I have been a hardcore Mopar fanatic all my life. Ten years ago I got a great deal on a '36 Ford pickup that had been seriously hot-rodded. But before I got it home I had taken a magic marker to the grill and drew a pentastar and added a Direct Connection license plate to the front. Always said it added 10 miles an hour top speed and at least 3 mpg. In '67 my uncle bought two identical 'his and hers' Plymouth GTX's. Incredibly cool cars, I'll never forget them. But the biggest influence in my young life was the two 1969 Superbees that my dad bought brand new. First was a white one with a red stripe. That one didn't last long before he swapped it for a blue one with a white stripe, white top and white interior. I'll never forget crossing what is now the Skyway Bridge over Tampa Bay with my Dad saying 'here's 90, want to see a Hundred, how about 110?' That one is still my all-time dream car. My dad also raced all of the local tracks and had even raced against Don Garlits (another diehard Mopar man). Another uncle held the local track record in the Stock class for years.

Over the years I have owned every cool Mopar made, Challenger's, Cuda's, Charger's, and even a winged Daytona (wish I had that back!). All going back to the influences I had as a kid. But my father and I drifted apart and hadn't talked for years till about 5 years ago. Imagine my chagrin when I pull up at his house and see a Ford Powerstroke dually in the driveway. After two decades of not talking to my father, that ended up being my issue.

My father told me that after years of owning nothing but Mopar, he was tired of fighting them. He said his biggest issue was that he had to go to the dealer for every little thing. He said the final straw was breaking down in Atlanta, Georgia in a two week old dually and having to fly home. He owns a state wide plumbing company in North Carolina and can't afford downtime. He said he flew home, bought a Powerstroke and never looked back. If it needs parts he can get them at Autozone. If it needs to go to the dealer they have the parts and he gets the truck back the next day. With Dodge and Cummins not being in-house there always seemed to be an issue getting the truck fixed.

Of course I told him he was full of crap. But I have found with my 12v and now with my 24v that I can't just run to Autozone and get what I need. I can either go to the dealer or hunt it down on the internet. And even now when I find what I need I have to spend a couple of hundred extra dollars to get what I don't need.

For instance this APPS. The bellcrank is not worn. For certain the cast bracket is fine. Yet I have to buy the whole danged thing, and no one has it locally. Exactly the reason my Dad bailed from Mopar after 3 or 4 decades of loyalty.

Now that I have vented I will say I love my Cummins. I sold my '96 with 340,000 miles to a tree service. He pounds it every day and loves it. I don't dislike my '02, but I am tired of every little problem becoming an adventure. I could never dream of owning anything but a Cummins. But I can dream of owning a vehicle that is a little easier to service.

I hear ya loud and clear. In the past month I have had to replace my alternator, and oil pressure sender. Dodge dealer said 430.00USD for a new alternator, but it would take over a week to get it. O'reilly auto gave me the completely wrong one, and couldnt get the right one at all. Autozone was clueless. Napa got the right on in about 5 days. As far as the oil press. switch. Cummins doesnt stock that part anymore for my truck. O'Reilly, autozone, and napa has no idea what it is... FInally had to go to rockuato.com to get it.

Im living in a town of 300,000+ people right now and am having worst problems trying to find part then when I was living in a town of 1,700 ppl. I dont get it

I am using one from an automatic on my manual I bought used on ebay several yrs ago for $30. Only thing I have done is recalibrated it.

I have 3 used one from my dad, he would rather buy new. All they need is recalibrated.

I sure wish I had the time to wait on a used unit. Unfortunately it looks like I will have to go buy one from Dodge tomorrow. $504.00 plus tax. Can't tell you how bad that hurts right now, but after an hour with the phone book no one else has one. And although I knew better, I even tried the junkyards. Everyone said the same thing, 'I have lots of Ford diesels, I have tons of Chevy diesels, but no Dodge diesels. Those things just don't die'.

And ctd89-99, thanks for the tip on the TDR site. I read the whole APPS discussion, all 30+ pages and 4 years worth, in one sitting. Very informative and interesting. Sharp bunch guys that worked through this problem. If I wasn't pushed for time on this I would absolutely buy their solution. If for no other reason than to support them for the time, money and effort that they put into solving a problem that Dodge/Cummins should have solved years ago.

I bought mine at Cummins for a hair under $300. Still a lot of money, but it's not $500.
