What tools are needed to swap thermostats?
 

My truck was left where I noticed the engine light on and temperature guage rising. I will be hiking back to it this morning and put in a new thermostat. I will be walking and cant bring my whole toolbox

What tools will I need?
1998.5 24 valve CTD

well i'm off for the walk. I guess it will be a few open/closed wrenches and a ratchet/ few sockets and hope I get lucky.

How did it turn out?

I hear that handy, I hope he didn't have to walk back down due to one simple forgotten item.. formagasket comes to mind. so does flat blade screw driver to pry apart the housing from the block. Worse some knucklehead behind the parts counter forgot to ask him if that was the new hemi cummins motor and he go the wrong themostat. I hope it went better than that

I ended up throwing a handfull of wrenches and sockets in a tote bag and sure enough......... I brought everything including a flat blade and nothing under 9mm. The 3 bolts are 8mm on the thermostat housing. I bought a Cummins thermostat and was under the impression that no form a gasket was needed (there is an O-ring type of seal on the outside of the stat. It took two hikes to get a 8mm socket and I took off the old one to see it has the original unit in there and I think it was stuck in the closed position. I buttoned it back up and no leaks. The guage doesn't hit any more than 185-190. I think I am good.
As to the engine light, it is still on and I get 2 codes.

PCM is back on the firewall, right by where the heater core hoses go in,
perhaps it got sprayed with coolant, thus losing connection?

Anywhoo, make sure the connections are good, there should be 3 big plugs with a whole mess of wires.

glad ya got er done, formagasket comes in handy if the factory seal gets torn coming out thats all, limp home get it fixed right when I get time....

I had a t-stat go when I was 50 miles from nowhere on my old Ranger. Had the tools so just pulled it out, gutted the poppet and reinstalled (grommet type gasket on outer flange).

I don't know how valid it is, but I find a lot of bolts used by auto mfg's are of the sizes that have a US equivalent (5/16 vs 8mm, 5/8 vs 16 mm, 3/4 vs 19mm) so they are good bets to have with you.

I took my tool bag out of the truck to make extra room for all the crap we have been moving into our new home. I probably carry more tools and self fix-its than most people in that tote bag. I also have a medium sized plastic box full of tire plugs, patches, fuel filter(s), oil filter, oil, coolant, belt, hoses, light bulbs, duct tape, tie wire, air compressor, and a mess of other things I cant remember right now.
But one thing is for sure....... all that don't mean squat when its sittin in the garage.:D
Good thing is the thermostat is in and all is well temp. wise.
Stupid dummy light is still bothering me though.[verymad]

So put a piece of electrical tape over it and be done with it.[laugh]

Sorry I did not notice this one sooner. Take an 8mm socket, extension, and wrachet. I would carry a 10mm also just in case. Takes about five minutes, no gasket involved.
