Westach FP Sender Bad?
Ok i have my Guage all hooked up. I get ZERO reading. I double checked all my wiring and checked if any of the wires were broke and all is good. The truck runs fine so i would think even if my LP was dead i would get some movement on the guage. When i was triple checking my sender i noticed one of the posts were loose that are on the sender (not the wires the posts the wire hookes up too) I wonder if thats why it isnt working. I tightned it up but still nothing. I didnt bleed any air out of the hoses to the sender should i? This is really making me mad. What should i do next? I think its just a bad sender from the factory.

check your ground wires, if all is good, call the distibuter to get a new sender. I don't think I bled mine when I put it together. I did have a few issues with loose/bad connections at the sender. Hope you get things figured out.

Ok i tried to make sence of the trouble shooting on the back of the instructions. I used my ohms meter and when i check the ground and lead on the guage i get it to move backwards. I ran a ground directly to the - post on the battery and when i fire up the truck it still doesnt look like it is moving. I disconnected the 12v to the guage while it was running and guess what? The guage actually moved like 1/16" up. So when i have the guage powered up it pulls it to negative. I think the sender is wacked. I cant see how a truck could run perfectally with 0 or negative fuel pressure. Any other thoughts?

Mine got to the point where it would automatically go to zero once it got down to ten. Just sent to Genos and got another, problem cured.

The VP injector pump has a small fuel pump built in, and CAN pull enough fuel to run without the Lift Pump. This could very well show as a zero or even a negative reading on the gauge.
This will not supply enough fuel to run the engine AND cool the pump causing a shorter life expectancy of the high $$$ injector pump. Ed |
Rabbit, I hooked my Westach up Saturday and had the opposite problem. It pegged to max. and stayed there. I reversed wire hookups at sender and it works great. But, I did find out that my L/P is "headed"souith". Will be calling dealer today for replacement.

First of all, Is fuel getting to the sender?
How is your sender plumbed? Did you do the Schrader valve/geno's hose, or the tapped banjo/grease hose hook up, or just put the sender into the pump(not recommended because a hose will dampen the vibrations)? I first did the shcrader valve & geno's hose method, and overtightened the hose on the valve. It jammed the plastic piece that actuated the valves into the valve. it wouild not flow fuel. I went down to the parts store, and bought a grease gun hose and threaded it into the tapped banjo. THen it worked. |
You can buy a mechanical 30 psi gauge for under $10 from most hardware stores. Just install it in place of the sender to verify if the sender is the problem.

I hate FP senders. I think they should all go...well you know. I went through 3 VDO senders (supposedly the best on the market) for my FP gauge. It actually costed me a new fuel pump because I thought that pump was bad. Turned out it was the gauge. I just installed a 30psi mechanical gauge from merrick and it's sitting at 20psi solid.

I plan on checking the FP with a mech guage tomorow. My brother-in-law is a mechanic unfortunately he isnt at work today. First thing is i will check it pre filter since its the easiest. If i have pressure (which im 99% sure i do) i will disconnect the sender and check there. I want to make sure there is FP there before i send back the sender.
My set up is a 1/8 45* post-filter then a Grease gun hose (18") to a 1/8 90* up to the FP sender which is mounted on the firewall. The sender is completely vertical. There is no mention if it can be mounted on its side or even upside down. I figured vertical was best because ive seen pictures of peoples mounts like that. Thanks for all your insight. If you think of anything else please let me know. Oh and my hardware stores or even home depot only sells ones for water. I have an el-cheapo (sunpro i think) oil pressure guage that you are supposed to mount in a car it is mechanical with a small hard plastic tube sitting in my garage. Its been there for a year never used can i test with that i wonder? |
If you have fuel at the sender, and it wont work, then just call geno's and they will send you a new one. Probly be at your doorstep in 2 days. :)

Yeah!! Well i now know what my problem was................ I have zero fuel pressure. I hooked up a mechanical pressure guage to the other port and got a big fat zero. We then spent the next hour trying to get the truck running again. Looking at the LP i found a red wire totally corroded off and hanging there. It arcs when u touch it to the post its supposed to be connected too. I now know what thet wierd noise i would sometimes faintly hear when i went over some bumps. It was the wire arching to the post. Well we know the LP worked when the filter was changed 8723 miles ago that sucker lasted 146,727 miles at least. Is that a record for an original LP?? Tomorow ill be off to NAPA or Cummings if i can find a cummins dealer that wont rip you off (not a good chance) At least my Brother-in-law gets a hell of a discount at NAPA or a Dodge dealer.
