I am looking to buy a 2004 Dodge Quad cab Cummins. The problem is I am not sure how to tell the standard HP motor from the H.O or the 600 series. Here is the vin 3D7KU28684G175363. I have tried the free online decoder but they only tell me it is a cummins. I am going to test drive the truck tomorrow and would like to know before I make any deals. The truck is at a Ford dealer. So they have no clue. Thanks for anyones input

This is from the 04 F.S.M. Looks like a S.O. 8th position in vin # is engine desinagation.

..yes, it's an HO. They all were by then with the 48re trans. HP rating will be on the label on the valve cover. There is also an outstanding recall e-17 on the truck (no biggie....reverse alarm).

Not all of the the 04 Cummins are H.O. You can either get it with 250hp and 460lbs or a H.O version. I have also found they started calling some motors a 600 series. I drove the truck today and i was not impressed with it at all. It did not seem to have the same tourquee punch that my 94 has with the 3.54 rear end. Plus it look way to much like a work truck. Lots of paint chips around doors and bed was a little more abused than i would like. So I drove around the corner to a Dodge dealer who had just taken a 04 quad dually on trade. This one seemed nice and had some punch to it. But it had more miles on (65k) than the other. But I think this truck had the 4.11 rear end. So I was not impressed by the fuel mileage averages. And the sales manager came over and tried to jam the truck down my throat telling me it was a 30k truck and he was not coming down on price (24900). I told him to keep it and walked out and informed him the dealer down the street would gladley take the 5k burning a hole in my pocket. And that they built more than one Dodge 3500 in the year 2004. I then drove across town to a Chevy dealer that had a 04 quad cab 4x4 sb with the H.O (c vin) This truck flew and had some nice options power seats, infinity system, alloy rims. As I was on the test drive my phone rang twice. The Dodge dealer was trying to reach me (HAHA). When I got back to the dealership we went through the normal dance with the salesman. How much would you like to pay for the truck. I give my standard answer that I got a sawbuck in my pocket. That sounds like a price I want to pay. But seriously I came in at 23k and once again the sales manager did not want to budge a penny. So once again I got up and walked out and let them know they did not have the only one in the state. I got about 5 miles and the phone rang. The Chevy dealer was willing to come down on the price now. They dropped it to 25800. I told them I would think about. While on the phone with the Chevy dealer the Dodge dealer called and told me they would drop down to 24k. i told them I would also think about it. So here is my question to the forum. The vin on this 04 Dodge 3500 with the HO is 3D7LU38C64G188452. So now my question is. Is this a regular HO or 600 series HO. The buid date on the door was 1/04 if that helps at all. I know their is a difference since when you search for performance parts they list a 04.5 seperate and claim it is a 600 series. This is the truck I really like. And will probably buy at 25k and not a penny more
Nope....250 was the early build 03's with the 47re automatic trans in the DR body. Mid year when the 48re trans was introduced they all got the same engine. 04 on your best bet is to check the data plate on the engine if you are shopping by HP.......and you very welcome.

JBody already answered your question....you need to check the data plate on the valve cover. If it says 325 HP then you are getting the 600.
Not sure where your got your "250 HP" info BigDave but I'm venturing to guess it was from a salesman. One should consider double-checking any info from a salesman before putting it to use.
JBody....that was cool of you to post all that VIN decode info.

2003 started with the 250/460 package (speaking auto trans here) and also the 235/460 (california). When the 48re came down the line you could get the "HO" that only the manuals had previously which were at 305/555. Personally I like the late 03 and 04 trucks. Good power and fewer mpg complaints from what I've experienced. In 05 they changed the trans strategy and you could no longer lock out overdrive when engaging the tow/haul. Didn't make that big of differance, BUT....if you had the right load on the right grade at the right speed the trans would "hunt" in and out of OD....PITA!!! 06 they changed again with the "tow/haul" and "od off" choice....and you can have an exhaust brake factory approved
As Ladysmithmike said, it's an SO. If there's a "6" in the 8th spot of your vin, it's an SO. The HO's and all the 600 and 610's have a "C". The early HO's, around 99-01 had a "7" in the 8th spot.
Check the drivers door jamb for the date the truck was built. I bet it was built before Jan of 04. From 1/1/04 (approximately), all the 04 Cummins were 600's. I'm saying approximately because the NV5600 was discontinued on that date in 05, but my Jan 05 built Cummins has the NV.

The vin is a "c" and the build date was 1/04. I listed in that in my long winded reply. I am not shopping by Hp by any means. But the first 04 I looked at seemed to be dogged down. maybe it just needed a filter. But it didn't matter either way. I did not like the truck. I really liked the 3rd truck I looked at. This is the one that seemed to have tons of power and nice options. I am really just trying to narrow down what I am buying. I read complaints about a small turbo on these years. I also read some where that the "c" the higher output version of the motor that year came with a 4in exhaust. So from I can figure out by the previous posts is that the Standard motor for 04 is the 03 high output 300/555 and the "c" 600 series motor has 325/600. The only reason I questioned so much was the fist truck I drove was seemed like such a dog compare to the dooley I drove with a "6" in the vin and then the "c" truck that really moved. I just started the process of buying a new truck and I dont want a car payment on a truck that is not excatly what I want. Or damm close to it. So now I think I have it figured out on the HP of the motors. So Jp if you are reading this. Can you please check the other Vin I posted. My next concern about this truck is. Does it have the snowplow prep package on it. I looked under the truck and it has the skid plate over the transfer case. But I couldn't figure out to tell if it had the 160 alt or the 136 alt. Thanks Jbody---Dave
