Trying to set timing, pin issues..

Well we finally tried to advance the timing on my 9512v and didn't get to far. The timing pin moved a hair in and out so it wasn't frozen nor was it broken do i believe since i read post saying 1/8+ play usually means its sheared. So we turned the engine over ALOT and kept pressue on the pin and it never dropped into place. I read on here one rotation of the cam gear is 2 rotations of the motor or something so we made a mark down by speed sensor and watched and we made 2 full rotations still nothing. Played w/ it for over an hour, seems like a edit method IMO but the directions for the drop valve method i found werent to clear either. We also tried to take the pin out and i couldnt find info on doing that everywhere says it pulls right out, is there a clip or retaining ring behind the holder? Just really annoying the pin held us up from bumping my timing. Anyone got any suggestions I need to get this done as mine has slipped back by some symptoms it shows. The dodgeram.org's directions say if your #1 cylinder exhaust valve is starting to close your pretty close to reaching TDC. Also can light finger pressure be held on that pin pushing forward or do you have to give it all your might, and will it just plop right into place once it finds the hole or what?

Thanks!

garrett

It does sound like your pin is broken. If you can get it to move without unusual pressure, then it will drop right in the hole when it comes around.

There are two ways to do the valve drop, one is to actually drop the valve on the piston and use a dial indicator to find TDC. Drop it 0.050 in each direction, mark the points, TDC is in the middle. This way is spooky because if you aren't close the TDC the valve can fall in the hole.

The other way is to use the valve adjuster screw to hold a valve down and bar the engine over both ways until it hits the valve. Mark both hit points, TDC is in the middle. You need to have all the injectors out so the engine turns freely because you don't want to hit the valve with any force. You need a barring tool for either method.

You can get close to TDC by pulling out the lock pin on the injection pump (it's under what looks like a bolt head) and looking in the bore for the lock slot to come by. When you find that lock slot, you are very close to TDC on #1.

Look on the bright side, you were lucky it didn't go in.
The pin can be off by as much as 2°, you're much better off to use the valve method.

make sure to remember to pull it back out before barring the engine though don't ask
