truck wont disengage 4 wheel drive right away
 
hey guys the 4x4 engages fine and right away anytime i want it too and the light comes on right away too.....now when i disengage it the light goes off right away but i can still feel it pulling with all 4 wheels and a min or two later it "pops" out of it....

i have not checked the fluid in the transfer case since i got it (what fluid do i put in by the way anyhow?!)

any ideas guys?

ps yes i am moving the lever all the way between the two positions

Probably your CAD is hanging up.

How long does it take before it disengages a few seconds is normal. Your Tcase takes ATF fluid. Check your owners manual for specifics. Mak also say on the plate of Tcase what fluid to put in it.

sorry whats my CAD?? and it takes a min or two at times...i dont drive in 4wheel drive very often at all did some driving today so id say one to two min sometimes then it "pops" while im driving and its all good

I find that if I give mine a good shot on the "gas" and then let off quickly the 4X4 will disengage the front axle. I think it's the quick load then unload that lets the CAD (CAD = central axle disconnect - or something like that?) release.

I know mine will not disengage if you have your foot in her, let your foot off and light goes out.

Basically there is a vacuum-controlled splined collar that slides over your passenger side axle shaft to engage the 4wd. Like folks are saying up above just give it a quick shot of petro and let off and it will pop right out. Could check your vacuum connections to be sure that there are no leaks. Look for red and black tubes coming out of the axle on the passenger side, those are your vacuum lines. Check all the rubber boot connections.

An old trick I know that worked on my old F150 (it had auto hub locks [yuk] , before I swapped in manuals), to properly disengage you had to back up at least ten feet for them to unlock.

every vehicle that ive ever had with the cad system did that - so , i think you're probably ok. ive noticed delays on engagement and disengagement. if i am spinning my 2wd wheels and am stuck - sometimes , i have to put vehicle in neutral to "unbind" the driveline . same applies to driving up a road- sometimes you have to let off the trottle for a second or depress the clutch. same thing for disengagement. if you are traveling under light to medium throttle, and pop it out of 4wd, the shift collar inside of the front axle cannot slide to release since its under torque - so you have to let up on the throttle - or hit neutral for a second.

When i Change back to 2 wheel drive i always do in neutral at a stop and it stays engaged for 3 to 5 mins .. very bad when i have to use 4x4 for snow then i get to a highway that is plowed ,she doesnt like the pavement in 4x4 at all pulls both ways very hard to control .. any help ?

You need to unbind the drivetrain - put it out of 4wd while still rolling, preferably straight. If possible in the situation, disengage 4wd and back up 10ft.
If you got other problems like slow engaging of 4WD, vents reacting slowly etc you should check your vacuum system.

So its nornal for the front end to bind on wet asphalt

what year and model truck do you have. Didn't see where you specified.

My 92 and 93 required me to,back up, then throw it in neutral. It would shift right out if 4x4

Its an 03 silverado with floor shift 4x4
