Unhappy Truck Runs HORRIBLE!!!

Ok, I posted previously in the 1st gen forum about my turbo being chewed up the other day by a bird feather when the intake hose popped off...Found pieces of the turbo inside the inlet hose & filter.

I was driving the truck normally, everything was great, I was making a left turn over an overpass in neutral at about 5mph...When I put it in gear and gave it throttle, the turbo made a "WHIIIIISH" noise and the truck ran like JUNK.

I put the inlet hose back on and it still ran bad...so I pulled the hose off the turbo side and noticed the compressor wheel.

I had to get home, so I had to limp it home a few miles. While on the way home the EGT's were like 900 and I was barely putting down the road, so I'd back off the pedal and idle for a while til the EGT's got safe again.

Well I replaced the turbo today and the truck STILL runs like .

At idle it sounds somewhat decent, but if you add the slightest amount of throttle, the motor shakes badly and sounds like it's running on 3 cylinders

I spoke with JBHale and he spoke with another Cummins Tech and they suggested that the springs in the pump may have broke

I called a local diesel/pump repair shop and they said it could just be something clogging the intercooler, or some injectors stuck open.

I told them about the suggestion they other guys gave me about the springs in the pump...They want $795 to $895 to replace the broken springs, rebuild the pump...I can't afford that...NO WAY.

Tomorrow I'm going to pull the Intercooler and try a backflush with pressurized air to see if anything is plugging it up. I don't think the truck would run that bad if the intake plugged.

But this spring thing sounds confusing...

Anyone got any other ideas/suggestions?

My motorcycle will be down til late next week, and the truck is the only other thing I've got to drive...and to top it all off, I'm BROKE.

Did the truck decide to run bad at the same time as the intercooler hose problem? If it did, then you know where to look. If not, well, I don't know where to go for help...................

The hose that popped off was the inlet tube to the air filter, not the intercooler hose.

It doesn't fit very tightly around the neck of the stock filter box assembly and comes off every so often...this time with catastrophic results.

nitrousn...the hoses were ON the turbo, everything connected like STOCK.

See this thread for the "catastrophic results"

I was at a dyno event when a user here, Drawson, popped his turbo.
It resulted in a total engine rebuild.

Ok, he was on a dyno at the time, and pushing upwards of 50psi, parts of his compressor wheel made it all they way through the engine, parts of it were sitting in the exhaust pipe,
and the rest was deposited everywhere in his engine.

I'd say at the low speed you were at, you have some pieces that at least made it to the intercooler,
if not further (hopefully not)

Jeremy , did you check the turbine wheel for any damage on the old turbo , I would just to make sure , sounds like you have some internal damage , if you do find some damage on the outer fins on the wheel , then you do have internal damage and go from there. you wont see anything unless you remove the turbine housing to inspect .

phox...come on...that doesn't help my emotional status, haha.

I'm freaking out, this is my ONLY vehicle, other than the motorcycle that will be up & running late next week. I'm unemployed and tight on money...this just happened at the WRONG time.

JohnCA58...The stock H1C is in rebuilable condition, minus the compressor wheel. I inspected the turbine wheel and it's covered in the typical soot, doesn't have any markings where something might have gone through it. I took the H1C apart and inspected the bearings & thrust plate, everything seems fine. I'll end up throwing some new bearing in it along with an HX40 Compressor wheel and keep it as a "spare". I installed an HX35W with a 16cm2 Wastegated housing in place of my stock H1C/18.5cm2 today.

The sound the motor makes, and the way it's acting sounds mechanical...so the "broken springs" in the pump suggestion just might be the problem.

I'll be inspecting the intercooler tomorrow to see if anything made it through.

After installing the HX35, and starting it up...and having the motor run that badly, I felt sick to my stomach...this is NOT good.

I'd say that maybe you should check your valve clearance- maybe there's a small bit of debris sticking at an intake valve. Would sound nasty and make it run bad.
Did you have oil pressure when driving it home?

A cylinder leak down test will tell you if you've damaged any valves or scored some cylinder walls with debris from the turbo. Might be worth paying for just for peace of mind. Good luck with it.
