Truck revs up to rev-limit and hangs with no throttle input.....
Alright I'm posting this for my dad so it's not my truck......
He has a completely stock '06 Mega 4x4 Laramie with around 80,000 miles on the clock. Truck has had quite the problems since day one -- ac quit working twice, blend door messed up, lift pump went out, trans quit shifting correctly, high rail pressure codes, etc. Recently when he starts the truck it will idle rough and blows quite a bit of white smoke that almost has a blue tint to it. He just called me a few minutes ago and said that he pulled up to a stop light and as soon as he slowed to a stop the truck instantly revved up to the rev-limiter and would not quit revving. He was not giving it any throttle at all when this happened. He said the truck tried to lurch forward on him when it did this so he put it in neutral and it kept revving so he shut it down. Cranked it back up and it was fine for a few miles. He pulled into a station to get diesel and it did it again but this time he was moving at a slow rate of speed and still slowing down. When the rpm's jumped it forced the truck forward and he nearly took out a fuel pump because of it.
Does anyone have any ideas on this? He's still about an hour from his house and is going to try to make it home but if it does it any more I'm gonna go get him.

Sounds Dangerous!!! White Smoke On Start Up Would More Than Likely Be Injector Which Could In Turn Be Over Fueling Very Bad Check The Oil, If Level Is High Bet On Injectors,80000 Mile I Would Let Dodge Worry Bout It.. That Is My Opp Maybe Some One Else Can Giveyou Better Advice.. Good Luck
These are drive by wire, so the problem can be any number of things. With the list of other problems, I would suspect anything from a grounded A/C sensor to a bad ECM. The only way to avoid throwing money and guessing is to get it scanned with the real scanner. The best bet is to shut it down and have it towed to either a Cummins Service Center if it is off warranty, or to a Dodge dealer is you are stuck with their second rate warranty.
Thanks for the help guys. It hasn't done it any more and he is only a few minutes from home now so I think he's good for the night (crossin' my fingers). We're gonna get it somewhere tomorrow to get it looked at. I guess it'll go to the dealership to at least get scanned. Dealership is outta the question for work though even if there is warranty remaining. He's had such bad luck out of the local dealerships that he refuses to go to them and would rather pay and go somewhere he trusts to work on his truck. Kind of sad but I guess that's just the way it is. Hopefully he can get it fixed soon because the truck makes the living if you know what I mean......

I would check turbo hose and see if any oil is getting into intake from turbo. Throttle position sensor could be going out, you would need scanner to check out. If oil from turbo shutting off ignition would not kill engine since it is burning engine oil.
Checked the oil today in his truck and it was actually a little low, jet black, and smelled really burnt. He just had the oil changed about 2,000 miles ago so it's not time for an oil change. Another funny thing is that he has been getting around 19 mpg on the highway hand calculated and last night he only got 15 mpg. Same driving style so it's kind of odd. Any other ideas? There isn't a Cummins shop anywhere around so he is taking it in to the dealer tomorrow to at least have it scanned.

Alright my dad had to go out of town today so he left the truck with me to take it to the dealer. It sat all day yesterday and when I cranked it this morning it had the white smoke and rough idle. The motor also had a "pinging" sound to it especially when it is put into gear. The dealer is only a couple miles away so I went ahead and drove it up there. The truck has very little power, blows lots of smoke, and I can't hear the turbo spooling so I think the turbo may be gone for one. When stopped the brakes have to be held nearly to the floor to keep the truck from pushing through the redlight and when you put it in neutral it'll rev up to about 2000 rpms and then idle back down. I had to make a left turn and when I put the blinker on it blinked left and right at different times and at the same time. I'm not 100% sure but a car passed while I was waiting to turn and it looked like the headlights were flashing as well. Oil level was even lower this morning than yesterday. Trans is shifting from first to second, second to third, then it goes back to second, and then it feels like it goes straight into fourth and skips third. When I got to the dealer I put the truck in park and when I shifted from drive to park it jerked extremely bad. Then to top it all off I turned the truck off and a belt or something squealed very loud.
Something is seriously happening in this truck and it seems that all the gremlins have attacked at once.......

Well after a new turbo, new trans, new multi-function switch, new pressure relief valve, new fuel control actuator, a complete service, a flash, and a good cleaning........ all is well again with the truck for now.
Too bad the warranty didn't cover the multi-function switch, trans, service, and all the associated labor. Ouch........
