I have an 05 dodge ram 2500 with the 5.9. automatic.
starts up but when i put it in gear (1,2,D or R) it will only move for a few feet very slowly with rpms upto 4000. then it wont move until i let it cool down for a few hours. HELP!@

How much fluid is in it and what is the condition of the fluid?

wrightbike450 Mar 29, 2011 10:58 AM

it looked brand new and there was plenty of it

did this come on slowly or all of a sudden?
WAIT!!! RPMS AT 4000??? What do you have done to this truck? Most won't go over 3100 or so as they have a governor.
Please fill out signature, it will help to diagnose. Like maybe a broken input shaft, or is the tranny stock with a HUGE tune is could be the converter or just the pump gone away.
Start by checking the line pressure.

What she said......There is no way that truck is pulling those RPM's without the huge SMARTY tunes....

The input shaft is there, this is a fluid coupling issue. Heat kills autos, and if he is getting in and hammering it....sounds like the converter or clutches/bands are GONE!

I still have a hard time seeing 4K out of it. When my flex plate shattered my truck hit 3750 and hung there....no way of bringing it down till it was ready.

i have a programmer for it and i was using. one night i tried pulling a upside down car, and jerk it twice and blew my front drive shaft off. a week later i noticed it made funny noises when i put it in gear then they started grinding then stopped more the next day.
i drained the fluid, put new fluid in it. then drained it again and it was clear with a bunch of metal pieces.

and maybe i over thought the rpms, maybe 2500-3000 lol

My money is on the input shaft! No go, in any gear. Sounds like it to me.

so would it be better to get a new trany? or just repair what i got. i have the money to buy a new one right now. but thats it

I say go with ATS. 5yr 500k mile warranty. You will be glad you did. And if your throwing that much power at it, just rebuilding won't last long! In my not so humble opinion! :D

I second a new trans. Mine is Georend, and it is a night and day different truck. I love it!
