Tranny problem????

A friend of mine has a 96 12v with about 165k on it.

He was on his way to Nebraska this morning, pulled over with his trailor to check the license plate on the back, and the truck refused to move after he got back into it.

Supposedly, he bought this truck with a rebuilt automatic tranny. My question is this: Before he pulls this tranny out and looks for a rebuild, is there anything else that might be wrong with this?

After he unhooked the trailor, he got about 5-10 mph running about 2000 rpm. Any ideas?????????

Has he tried running it through all of the gears? It sounds like something hung in the valve body. May not fix it, but worth a try.

Gotta ask the obvious.

Did he check the fluid level?
Cooler lines have been known to let go and leave all the fluid back on the road.

How about the linkage, is it all still linked?

Yes, check the fluid level. That happened in my dads old chevy. A cooler line started leakin good and drained the tranny low enough that the TC didn't have enough fluid to drive the gears. We were driving along and the tranny kicked itself into neutral.

I have a 95 with 167K miles and noticed the tranny starting to leak from the filler tube. Gasket went bad.

I had a filler tube break off where the tab bolts up. It broke in half right there and the T handle on the dipstick fell on the turbo and melted. Made a mess and a horrible smell.
