Shifting in and out of o/drive
 

I have a 99 2500 4x4 w/auto....at 40 to 60 mph when the overdrive kicks in it goes in and out of overdrive. The tach flutters and the truch kinda surges. At 65 mph and above it's fine. I had this problem last year and you guys suggested cleaning the battery connections...that the problem was due to electrial interferance. This did the trick and I have had no problems since....until now. Same thing. I cleaned every conection i could find. One mechanic told me to buy new batteries.
The truck is due for it's tranny service, but is not overdue and I don't overwork it at all.

Any suggestions?

I had the same problem and talked with the folks at DTT. They had me clean my battery cables on both ends. They said that the most common mistake wsa cleaning them on the battery end only. That worked for my truck, but it has only been three months. They felt that the next step was a noise filter. They have one for ~$35 that is easy to install. I tried a Happi box, and would not recommend it.

Anyone install a noise filter? where does it go? Is it somthing I can get a a Napa or other parts place...or it this somthing special for diesels

The noise Filter can be had at DTT ( http://dieseltrans.com/dodge/price_list.htm ) and some other Dodge Diesel specialised vendors. You can make something pretty close to the noise filter idea by using a capacitor (between 33 and 100 microfahrad, 100V minimum! ) between the APPS signal to the PCM and the PCM ground.
I'd recommend cleaning the PCM contacts, the grounding points on the body and the engine first, then to install an extra grounding wire from the PCM to the battery (bolt of the ECM closer to the engine, clean the PCM with sandpaper and use dielectric grease on the attachment) before going for a noise filter. The material is very cheap and you will battle the cause instead of masking the symptoms.

u mean you're in 4th gear and it feels like ur slipping in and out right? ur locking and unlocking the TC clutch....so its ur TPS or i think its called APPS in ur newer truck....dont get conned into new batteries!!!....the noise filter should work just fine...if it IS just ur lockup clutch the dont get conned into some silly tranny work either

Wade, I had the same problem, and it was diagnosed as a "noisy" TPS (throttle position Sensor). Dadge wanted $425.08 for the TPS and $260.00 to install it. I couldnt afford it, so I looked on e-Bay and found a TPS off a 2002 for $200.00 with 54,000 miles on it. I installed it, and no more shifting up/down.

If you replace the TPS don't forget to calibrate the new one. The old one will have a voltage written on it like 2.75 volts that is the signal return at idel. The new TPD must be turned in the bolt holes to this same value. The dealership replaced mine and did not do this. The problems got worse until DTT told me how to calibrate it.
