overdrive problems

1992 with automatic that won't shift into od. I have tested the TPS and it checks out OK. I have tried voltages from .5 to 1.7 at idle at the orange wire at TPS with no change. The only way the tranny will shift is by grounding out the orange wire going into the top of the transmission. My question is what is in between the TPS and the transmission and how do you test it. Also my speedometer isn't working I don't know if this is part of the same problem or not. I just bought the truck and don't know the history. :'( I forgot to add that the"TV" cable is adjusted to 1/8 gap in the slot measured at the firewall end of the slot.

Re:overdrive problems

I think that the speedo and the OD are connected problems. The truck won't shift into OD without the speedo signal.

If you have taken the speedo gear out of the tranny, possible the orientation is not correct. You need to consult a manual and make sure that the gear is slotted into the housing in the correct position, or else you will not have a speedo or OD.
Hope this helps.

I have a 4x4, so the speedometer adapter plugs into the transfer case. Is orientation a problem here also. If so can anyone help me with the "proper" orientation ?

Ask your question of Bill Kondolay at:

Another thing that can prevent OD from working is the tranny temp sensor (located at different places in different years). One example is:

Re:overdrive problems

Problem solved with a 29 cent washer. the keystock that sticks out of the gear adapter that plugs into the stub that the speedo gear is attached to was rounded off in the middle I put a facuet washer in between the two spacing them apart apart 1/8 inch so the stub contacted the keystock where it wasn't rounded off. This fixed my overdrive, cruise control and speedometer not bad for 29 cents and 15 minutes labor. ;D [laugh] ;D [laugh] ;D

Glad that you got it working, olgraybeard. I thought that it would have something to do with that gear. ;)
