Question Oil Press Gauge going crazy

My stock oil press gauge is doing wierd stuff. I got a "CHECK GAUGES" light when I first noticed it at ZERO. So I stopped checked my oil cap, dip stick, and just a good glance over. Nothing unusual. Started it back up, and oil went to just over 40. Turned the corner and right back to 0. I hated doing it but I had to atleast try and continue to work. After work I clmbed in and the gauge went to probably 60 and hung there....the engine wasn't runninig though. Milked it home...biting nails and listening for any freak noises. Now if I turn the ket to RUN it'll go up then drop to zero. Or it will go up and stay up for a minute or two after the truck starts then back to zero. The engine and turbo sound and run great as usual...what is going on? sensor? Help please!!

I have the same thing going on- I bought a new sending unit(still in the glove box...) from Cummins, you just need to give them the engine # off your plate. I forget exactly how much $- maybe $30? pretty common failure.

Where can I get the sending unit? I was thinking sensor, but that it about $260 from NAPA...a little cheaper but not much at some other stores. I really appreciate the response.

Try plugging your info in here to find your closest Cummins Parts house.

lucky 2001 owners, mine pulled that crap a while back and the unit (from Cummins) was still $90. What a load, something that should never cost over $30.

You might try simply unplugging the wires and clean the connections really good first. Mine has done it twice; once after the high-pressure car wash, and once after right driving in a heavy rainstorm. I sense(pun intended!) a pattern here...just sprayed the ends with WD-40(and haven't pressure-washed the motor since!). Could save even the $30 for something else more fun, eh?

Unfortunately my truck hasn't seen a drop of water in a long time. I've been too busy even to wash it. I hope that will help. Is there actually a difference between a "oil pressure sensor" and an "oil pressure sending unit"? It might be a dumb question. I just can't find any pictures for the location of a sending unit, only the sensor. I'm just trying to save what little money I have, and get back on the road.

Oil Pressure ?

I have replaced 2 on mine each of which lasted about 6 months, and since noticed that if I raise the hood and wiggle the wires at the sensor, then I am good for another month. This has been going on for over 5 months now. I have tried pulling the connector off the sender and cleaning, then reinstalling, that was good for about 3 months. Next I will check to see if the connector can be tightened.

Number 22 (under the fuel filter) is the Oil Pressure Sender
