NO oil pressure indication!!!! HELP!!!

ok guys here is the problem, i have plenty of oil in the truck and i'm not leaking oil from anywhere that i know of. the problem is that i have no indication of oil pressure on the gauges. i don't have a check engine light but the "check gages" is lit and stays on. however the first time that it came on i checked the oil and it was a little low. i added oil and waited about an hour and it was fine. i had around 50 psi which is normal for mine. i drove about 10 miles later that day and the light came back on and the gauge says 0 PSI. does any one have any advice as to what to check or what is wrong. anything is helpful right now. i will be installing a manual gauge on friday when i get off of duty but i'm searching for any answers between now and then!!!

First - it might be helpful if you let us know what year your truck is...

Second, if you have oil in the crankcase, it doesnt matter how many times the bell rings. This problem is likely a bad oil pressure sender. Dont get one from the Parts Store - they do not last and are a waste of $$. Get the sender directly from Cummins.

Third, you may have some other issue going on. Get your hands on an OBDII scanner and see if they are any codes.

Thanks again "Dr.Evil" so much for your help and advice.

I dont know where you live but there are lots of Cummins service centers. I believe some parts are also available from Freightliner.

If you go onto www.Cummins.com you will be able to search for parts/service thats local to you.

Very likely that it's just the sender, it was a common problem on these trucks from everything i've read.

I second Dr. Evil with getting parts directly from Cummins, you'll pay half of what the dealer gets for them. I can get you the part number if you'd like.

Here ya go, Cummins P/N: 4921511. I had to replace mine earlier this summer and it was right at $100 from Cummins, over twice that from Dodge.

When you go to replace it take the stock fuel filter canister loose(if you're still running it) and lean it out of the way, gives you a lot more room to work.

I ask this question because it happened to me. Have you switched from Rotella or dello oil to a synthic oil? If so, you could have a clogged pickup tube at the screen. I hope for your sake it's just the sender.

My old 01' was reading low oil pressure. I was stressing about replacing the oil pump when the NAPA guy told me he has sold several oil pressure senders. I bought one and put it on and sure enough , I had normal oil pressure again.

Hmmm. Didn't have to do that on mine. I put in a direct replacement from O'Rieley's for $29.95 one year ago and it's not gone bad since.

Welcome to DTR - pleast take amoment to fill out your signature so it's much easier to help with diagnosing issues. And you don't have to put it all back into each thread. I would suggest: Year, type (4wd or 2wd), transmission, apx mileage. as a minimum.

Good luck.

Thumbs up

I had this same issue on my 99. After talking with several people, I decided to just install a separate oil pressure guage. I went into the top of the oil filter housing with a T fitting and routed the line to the cab where my gauge is located.
This fix was pretty easy to install.
