Question Need VP44 help ASAP!

I have a 1999 CTD Ram with a bad IP. I have been reading all your posts on this board and they have been incredibly helpful in helping me diagnose the problem. I have found an individual that has Cummins Recon pumps for $850.00. I called a local Diesel Fuel Injection shop and they told me I needed a pump with a part number of 394 6135 RX. However I gave this individual my engine serial number vp44027x and he said it matched a Cummins part number of 3944983rx.
Could someone please confirm which part number Cummins Recon pump will work properly with my Truck.

My Engine serial # is 56583579
Again my truck is a 99 Ram 2500 with the 24v CTD.

What is the "vp44027x" number and how does it relate to the pump part numbers? What is the difference between all the Cummins part numbers?

Thanks - Craig

The part numbers are a bit confusing on the VP44 injection pumps, as they are serialized after the model and prior to the generation id. The higher number pump will work just fine, and as long as it is from an authorized Bosch Service agent you will be in good hands. The authorized Bosch folks have the updated parts kits that contain the improved components you need. Some of the independent folks do also, so you will have to ask them some tough questions about which approved upgrades were performed to the unit they are providing.

Regarding your question about the differences between all Cummins parts number, I could write a book. The basic underlying logic is that the CPL found on your engine corresponds to part numbers published for the same generation and series at the time of the CPL release. Newer engines used in Dodges, up through 2002, have different part numbers from yours, yet they nearly all interchange. The rule of thumb is that the newer parts will have upgrades not necessarily found in earlier part numbers. In some cases the Cummins part numbers will automatically cross to a newer part number when you use a Cummins Service Center to order parts, but that is not always the case.

When you get a rebuilt pump, and that is all that is available in the VP44, the number can be lower or higher. The pump should be rebuilt to the current specifications, but the number will just happen to be whatever sequence of the VP44 housing they happened to receive as a core during their exchange and rebuilt process. It also would not hurt a thing if you got a pump for a 2002 HO, it will also fit just fine and work without a hitch as long as it has the compatible Bosch upgrades that enable it to communicate with your ECM - in any case the pump shop will know.

If you are going to spend the $850 for a new pump, I heartily recommend you also spend the money and get the most current generation of lift pump to protect your expenditure. If you going to keep your truck a few more years and can swing it, go with the dual filter FASS system and toss the OEM lift pump, and you will probably never again lose an injection pump.

Thanks for all the info! So I guess what I really need to know is will the 394 4983 rx work with my engine? From what RCW wrote, he said the higher part number will work.
Can anyone tell me if this part number will work properly? Is it just an older pump number? Does it contain inferior upgraded parts to the 394 6135 rx part number?

Thanks again!

All rebuilt pumps intended for the Dodge application, and from authorized Bosch rebuilders contain the same parts. As long as the supplier knows your application you will be just fine. The middle sequence of numbers will have no impact on anything if the pump is built for the Dodge application, they just happen to be from the core pump used in the rebuild.

If you are screwing around with some "deal" on e-bay, then you have no way of knowing if the pump is crap or not, or even if it is rebuilt for the Dodge Cummins application. Then, I would pass right by and go see a real Bosch authorized pump rebuilder.

The price you were quoted is about average for any reputable rebuilder, so it is no red hot deal either way.
